use cellophane wrap, you can't see thru paper towels!

I say freeze it -

you can see the bump in the paper towels. plus it is absorbant. i think it is more humane.....rather fishmane to die quickly then freezing to death

The best and quickest way kill any small animal is to put it in a plastic bag and quickly hit it against a solid surface. You really cant go overboard with the amount of force you use.

The animal takes a quick ride as you wind up and then is suddenly knocked agains something. They dont see anything and dont feel anything.

Of all of the times I have had to use this technique (keep in mind I've worked in 3 different petshops during my lifetime) not one single animal survived the initial hit.

I used to kill poor defenseless animals when i was a kid.....supposedly i'm supposed to be a psycho now i guess....
who knew...lol

NEVER FREEZE!!!

NEVER FREEZE!!!

Guys, many sources say to never freeze fish. I can find them if you really want them, but take my word. Nearly every animal has nerves/nociceptors (pain sensors) and to think that fish cant fell anything exceptn there spine is silly. It's cliche but pain really does serve a prupose...to get the F-away. Everything i have read states that severing the spinal cord is the best/most humane method due to its quickness. NEVER freeze. What happens during freezing is a long and drawn out process of flesh crystalization, starting with the blood vessels. Imagine frostbite over the whole body...i never had frostbite, but i was broken down in backcountry road and my hands were freezing...the pain was rediculous and it wasnt even frostbite.

On a side note, starvation is not the worst way to go. In humans, hunger forces the body to release endorphins that numb the body from msasive amounts of pain, i can only assume that the same would happen to fish. Not sure on the clove oil...but if your friend wants to be humane but cant sever the head you should do it. You a burly guy, i have faith in your composure.

good luck.

The mose "humane" way would be to find something simular to when an animal needs to be euthenized. If clove oil is the thing, then that is best. I don't know how many studies have went into the whole fish/clove oil thing though. .

The sedative I have is Finquel, it is an anesthetic and clove oil is what I have read online here that some people use. I'm nnot sure about Clove oil, but Finquel has had studies done though....

I was told by a fish expert to take the fish out of the tank with some of the water in a cup and put it in the freezer, and he will go right to sleep, The only humane way to do it.

Why does a damsel have less of a right to die painlessly than any other living creature? As far as freezing, fish do feel the cold & are awake, freezing to death, before they actually die.

I read somewhere there was a new study on fish pain. Anyone know anything about this?
