Whats up with the water in West Knoxville

Ever since i moved here from Michigan last summer my DI resin exhausts VERY quickly

The TDS of the tap water is actually pretty good @ 187. Out of the RO i am getting 002-000 yet somehow i am doing through DI resin like it's going out of style

I am wondering if there is a CO2 issue with the water supply

Anyone else have issues?

I just moved from W to E but my DI depleted normally while I was there. Also, since carbonates are significant in planted tanks, I did some pH tests on this a few years back and don't recall them being very high. You can test yours by testing out of tap and then again after degassing and check using pH/kH and an online co2 calculator. I lived off Papermill if that helps.

I can't figure out for the life of me why this is going on

I just put in new DI yesterday, i thought maybe i wasn't packing it well enough so i packed it so tight i could barely get the lid on this time

20% of the DI is exhausted after 1 day!!!!:mad2:

Chlorine levels in Knoxville water is very high in some areas depending how close you are to the treatment plant. Some days when I take a shower it burns my eyes and throat. I've been in swimming pools with less chlorine. You can request a copy of the daily analysis of the water from KUB. Chlorine will not show up on TDS but will exhaust your resin.

wouldn't chlorine kill the RO filter also? aren't the carbon filters supposed to break down chlorine so it doesn't get to our RO filter?

Holdyourlight didn't mention having an RO unit. If he does and is still exhausting resin at that rate, then I suspect his membrane is shot.

I would hope the carbon before the RO membrane would take care of the chlorine. Carbon filters should be changed about every 6 months.

Hi Steve,
Yes in the first post i post my TDS numbers out of the RO then after the DI
I believe the membrane sat too long during my move to knoxville and started to grow mold. It smells terrible and will be replaced today and we'll see if it stops the DI issue.

Exactly.

No one else in West Knox or Farragut with this issue ???

I replaced the RO membrane and it did not help the problem at all

I am served by the First Utility District of Knox County for water not KUB

I am in zip 37922

does anyone else on this forum get their water from First Utility District of Knox County?

I have confirmed with them that their water has high co2 levels and that is the reason why my DI depletes so rapidly.

Just curious to see if anyone else gets their water from them, as you should be seeing the same problem...

I get my water from LCUB. After the first three stages, i have <200 on the TDS meter. After the last stage I have zero.

I do not remember what it is coming out of the tap. But, i seem like it was <400.

Tap water from First Utility is 187, i get 0-1 TDS out of the membrane
Unfortunately CO2 is a function of PH and alkalinity which is not measured in TDS. LCUB and First Utility pull from different water sources and if you are not seeing your DI deplete rapidly then good news from you because you probably have a higher PH and a lower alk which is what you want

What's the pH of the water out of your RO? Also, what kind of DI resin are you using? Mixed bed? Have you thought about going to a regenerable resins? Costs more up front but you can regenerate many times.

I have a new pH monitor on the way, it will be here Friday, so i'll let ya know then. pH of my tap water is 6.7 according to their testing. They said in the summer it gets up to 7.3. Still very low.

Yes i am using a Mixed bed resin (BRS)

I haven't heard much about regenerable resins. But i'll surely look into it if you have an links
