What's up with these yellow tangs?

I've used Seachem and salifert to test cupramine, salifert is easier to read and seems more accurate (based on how the test is performed vs Seachem), but I usually use both kits and compare to make sure my reading is accurate. With Seachem, I also always run the reference test for comparison.

I am growing quite wary of the cupramine method. Too little it is not going to be effective and little too much it will be harmful to the fish. For the next round of QT, I am thinking of going the Hypo way.

I generally dislike hypo because it is only effective against ich, therefore not a good choice for a prophylactic treatment. If your fish comes down with velvet 2 weeks into your hypo treatment, you are stuck at a low salinity that you can't medicate in. By the time you are able to bring the sg up, it would be too late. It's also difficult to execute, the target salinity is a very small window and a little evaporation can reset the 4 week treatment clock.

With cupramine, I ramp it up slowly over 6 days, and will shoot for .4mg/l (I feel the dosing instructions on the bottle are too harsh for most fish). Chloroquine phosphate is another viable option you can look into.

dang it! there is nothing simple in this hobby!

on a side note, what is the best way to bleach a tank and what bleach should I use?

bleach is bleach like MrTuskfish said, just use a water conditioner to neutralize the bleach. As far as the hypo i would stay away from it, it is much more stressful on fish and much harder to do correctly wit very little benefit (ich). Ami, i wasnt sure if the salifert kit worked with cupramine, thank you for clearing that up

oh and aravindk, nothing "easy" is worth doing. You will have setbacks in this hobby, it is just learning from them is what is important. If you are going to buy from petco, just make sure it is petco.com. Better yet buy from Liveaquaria.com or PIA or NYAquatics.com

A cup of bleach to a gal water is about what I use. Bleach is bleach, or am I missing something?

True, but try to stick with plain bleach. Stay away from the bleach with additives like scent, fabric softener, etc... Don't just use what you use to make your clothes smell good.

Especially if you are going to use it for more than bleaching your tanks like washing your filter socks and such. If you accidentally use bleach with additives, be prepared to do extra rinsing...

1) how big where they? Small yellows are very weak swimmers and even a small powerhead will catch them.

2) did they look frail at pet co?

3) Yellows are most definitely not collected with poison. There is a reason why Hawaii has some of the best collected fish.

4) cupramine should never be .5. I dont care what the label says. Ich will drop (and why would you use cupramine if you dont see anything?) at .3-.35 and will die at .4. Coppersafe is a much better alternative for QTing (tangs especially) as it less intrusive.

5) I would just avoid petco all together. And slow down your flow if they are less than 3"

I would agree as well about keeping cupramine at 4.0ppm, i haven't had an issue doing it this way. It also gives some room for evap and the copper concentration going up due to it.
