What's worng with my tangs? Pics Included.

Here is a question to ask Masterderrull... What are u feeding the tangs? It is primarily algae based or is it primarily fish or meaty based food. I would look there. I dont believe that running carbon will do that to a tang. I can say this. I have a purple tang since about quarter sixe up to about 3.5 inch in a 50 breeder with 3 other smaller fish. I never had any issue of HLLE with him and btw he is now in a 120 gallon tang with a hippo & dont have any issues what so ever. I used to have a 180 setup up about 5-6 years ago & bought 2 fish from PSP on Mcknight Rd. I bought a purple tang about 3 inchs & a desjardi both that had an advance HLLE which they said was from running carbon. I bout both for 40 bucks cause i was pretty sure i could recover both fish. I did after about 3-4 months of feeding them algae based pellets soaked in selcon or zoecon. I hope this helps ya.

i kind of did the same thing dude did, i found a yellow tang that had HLLE but managed to get him to overcome it with a proper diet. now he is super fat and no signs of HLLE, but he does have some slight scarring from it though

In the pics we can see them eating nori.

What else do they eat on a regular basis?

I have tangs in every tank I own, I run carbon in two of them and have no problems.

It is probably a combination of things that bring this on.

The one article mentions the carbon dust. Does anyone really use carbon without thoroughly rinsing it?

Might as well setup a 120 as it is still a 4 ft tank and will offer room for them to grow.

I have a 180 gallon (4 ft drilled Starfire) tank that I am thinking about selling. Let me know if you are interested.

Wow thanks for the plethera of info everybody. I have an auto feeder that drops about a gram of "formula two marine pellet" (38%crude protein) four time a day, I aslo give them a piece of green seaweed about 2"x3" everyday. Then whenever I feel like it I throw in a cube of frozen food, anything from mysis shrimp to some sort of marine salad (about once every three days).
