what's your favorite wrasse and why?

... I still can't figure out how it made it through the 1/4" mesh screen over the tank.

Here's my cover over the 75G

Hard to tell...but I'm pretty sure that you don't have 1/4" netting... If you
plan to keep small wrasses and other 'thin' fish you should double check the size!

I love my little McCoskers. He isnt gorgeous like some of the expensive wrasses, but his personality keeps me laughing. He is always up to something. And every day he seems to be in a different mood. I don't get it, 'cause his brain cant be that developed for him to have genuine moods, but he acts differently every day. Some days mellow, some days restless, some days like a total douche. I just love that little guy.

Same with my pair. They're more fearless with me than any other fish in the tank! I spent the better part of yesterday afternoon taking apart one of my two islands in my 120 to rescape in order to make more room for corals, and the little buggers kept swimming right up to me and inspecting my work! They were watching as I dulled a good pair of bone cutting shears getting through some concrete, and checked out every new hole or crevice that I made.

Very fun fish. I swear my big male flashes more and purely for my benefit when I'm sitting in front of the tank.

also looking at the Exquisite Fairy Wrasse. there is one at my LFS, it's much bigger than any of my other fish, at about 3.5".

any experience with one of these?

About the same in temperament compared to the lubbocki. Occasionally a bit prone to fading in color without other wrasses in the tank, however.

hmm, interesting. might swing by there and take another look at it on my lunch hour today. :)

It's definitely 1/4" mesh.

Sorry to hear about the McCoskers getting through. One of the early adopters of the mesh top said he doubled up the with two 1/4 mesh screens for extra safety. I prefer to use a sheet of acrylic over my tank. My flasher wrasse, in an attempt to escape the chasing of a dominant fairy wrasse, repeatedly launched himself against the acrylic top with an audible smack. I decided to rehome the aggressor rather than risk facial injury to the flasher wrasse. In another thread a guy lost his fish because the mesh top wasn't weighted and the fishs momentum opened the top for a split second:(

Except that the grates/covers don't cover the entire 18". There's a strip of eggcrate and mesh along the back of the tank over the overflow area where my return comes over the top and the power cords etc are housed. This stuff doesn't show up in the pic very well. You can barely see it to the right of the covers.

You had me doubting myself and I actually remeasured after your first comment. It's absolutely, definitely, 100% 1/4" mesh :wildone: :bum:

Lubbock's is a fantastic fish, great color, relatively inexpensive, and easy to get feeding. I've brought in a few through the store I work at, and each one had a different color scheme. They were similar, but I've had one with more red, one with more blue, and everything in-between. Some may have been female I suppose, but nontheless an impressive fish.

Exquisite's are equally as impressive, yet they can be a bit costly depending on where they are from. I haven't had enough experience to back up the color-fading issue, though I have heard of it before. I have an African locale at my store, he's in a tank with a Solorensis and a Lubbock's was in there for a while as well. He's still sporting his gorgeous pink shoulders, so maybe the other wrasse does have something to do with it. Still an awesome fish, eats anything I throw in the tank, gets along with others, and overall a very personable fish. I'll be sad when he goes haha.

Almost forgot the flashers haha. The first time I saw a Carpenter's flashing at a Royal Gramma in the same tank, I practically fell to the floor in love haha. I've noticed they will hide a bit more at first making feeding a bit of a pain, but once they are comfortable they are very willing to be out and about. As for the flashing, WOW; in less than a second the colors completely change and are very cool to observe.

after much indecision, i finally just bit the bullet and ordered a mcklosker's and a carpenter's. so much for my wish for a yellow fish!

i asked for saturday delivery since i know i'll be home. not taking any chances!

Nina, nice fish. They're so similar, not sure how well they'll do together, especially if they're both males.

Do you have a cover?

that was a concern of mine, jerry, but the lady i spoke with a LA was pretty confident they would be ok. we'll see. :)

oh yes, i have a glass cover over the entire tank. there are a couple of places where my return jets are that i'll have to put something over but that won't take much.

i also have a little sign within view of my fish. it says "no carpet surfing allowed". so far, it's worked!!

They will be fine together.

I don't recommend glass covers over a tank, my wrasses bounce off my netting all the time and I don't think they would fare too well bouncing off glass.
