When freshwater meets saltwater!

Alright so I'm doing a unique tank (I hope it is anyways) it's a 26g bowfront and it has 28lbs of rocking (waiting on last 18lbs should be here tomorrow) this tank is going to have a clash of freshwater fish and snails with saltwater fish and snails...

This all started because I set the tank up in an old tank I had and figured nothing was in it... Filled with sand, water, and live rock to get cycle going... Few days later I found Malaysian trumpet snails... Things are freaking indestructible haha! So that got me thinking of going a planted saltwater tank with freshwater fish mash up!

All fish will be researched to be 100% saltwater safe when properly acclimated...

14 guppies mix of colors and genders
1-2 firefish gobies
1 emerald crab
3 cerith snails
Unknown number of mts

Anyways my only worry is if the gobies will try to snack on the guppies (fry idc but the adults I do...)

I'm a little confused, but I'll hang out to see what comes of it...

FWIW: I acclimated several black mollies to SW, and they did very well in my reef. So well, in-fact that three of them gave birth (mollies bear live fish), and my fish had a feast on the frye. This was a good/bad surprise. LOL...

Then... My triggers got a taste for mollies, and went after the parents...
 
Just a FYI; you can acclimate almost any livebearer (guppies, swordtails, platies) to full s/w. You just have to acclimate them a lot slower than you would mollies.
 
MTS snails are a *****. They multiply like crazy and as you said are indestructible.

I spent 12-16 hours dripping a green spotted puffer from fw to sw. Also had some mollies but they were food for the puffer after a few days
 
I've known people who have done this before, and the biggest problem is eventually they buy a s/w fish (or invert) that eats/beats the crap out of the "sissy" f/w fish.

So, you gotta just stick with "sissy" s/w fish if you wanna keep the mix going.

I did a tank like this many years ago. It was a small tank set up to look like a FW display (rocks, plastic plants, etc) and had a bunch of mollies in it. It looked like a basic, boring freshwater tank- with a flame angel. Its a geeky fun kind of tank to set up; I'd like to do a little more elaborate version some day.

This! you want to stick with peaceful tank mates.
 
Well right now I'm stuck between a firefish or maybe a few blue-green chromis... Idk what kind of "sissy"sw fish I could get but I'm looking into it... If it goes for fry I'm okay with that I don't want the adults eaten though, if possible I guess...

It will be an awesome project and if I get fry to survive my lfs here defiantly wants to buy them! But right now it's all fun...

And I was thinking of adding fake plants to the setup if I get an herbivore saltwater fish Idk yet though... I'll kinda deal with that aspect as I go lol... Though I am impatiently waiting for my rocking that was suppose to be here yesterday...
 
Always wanted to try a similar setup as well, it would be nice (and very unusual) to see a full-blown SPS tank with fancy guppies. :lol::D
 
Right now the only coral I have is a green paly but the plan is for a bunch of zoas and mushrooms :) and according the the FedEx tracking number my rocks are on truck for delivery! I'm excited and hope my first time ordering from reefcleaners.com is a good one :)
 
Choosing between the chromis and firefish - I'd definitely go with the firefish. They look a lot more unique, someone who doesn't know saltwater wouldn't recognize the chromis as something out of place.
 
I'm probably going to find a pair of firefish to do this tank with... Would look cool!

I got an update on ly tracking number and it seems the seller for the rocking sent it to the wrong address -_- he is working on fixing the mistake though... Was looking forward to finishing the tank too...
 
I've seen mollies in the wild once. It was in saltwater. I have a feeling they are saltwater fish that we have been keeping in freshwater. :)
 
Nah I do feel they are brackish imo. Would be cool to see it in person though... I use to live in Florida coolest thing I ever saw was a giant sea slug and some groupers swimming in circles in the sun
