Where and Which Hach Nitrate Test Kit to Order

If you download the pdf for the kits you listed, it says chlorine interferes with the freshwater kits. Hach Recommends the kit below for saltwater:

Is this good? lol.
I'm determined to get my nitrate down and have been buying test kits and testing just to get a completely different results. My API is saying 60ppm+ and my Elos is saying 2.5ppm. I don't know! The color charts are hard to read. I move my head a little and the color can be different the good way or bad way. I really don't know how people can read these things and come up with a number!
The hach kit has the color wheel which I think is easier to read. I chat with the guy at Hach and he recommended this kit.

I don't mind the price as long as I know I'm actually getting something. I just hate it the fact that I can make the results anyway I want after the testing on the kits I've tried so far.

The customer reps are not always familiar with kits and the effect that salt water may have vs. fresh water. Chlorine in marine water interferes with many nitrate kits. I tried to download the pdf file for this kit and could not get the link to work. Make sure you question the rep regarding the use of this kit in marine water. He should check the pdf file specific to this kit first. ;)
 
Ok, this time the pdf file worked for the kit the rep recommended. It speciifically says this kit should not be used for testing marine water.

Check with the rep, but the one I have listed above should be the one you want. ;)
 
I asked him specifically for a nitrate kit for saltwater. I'll do a little more research on what to buy. I'm tempting to drive down to the lfs and grab a salifert kit but I'm afraid once again, I'll be able to change how I determine the nitrate value.
When is Hanna releasing that nitrate checker! I don't care if it's not super accurate but as long as it gives me a number and I can work on the tank to bring it down.
 
Many of the nitrate test kits will include nitrite in their reading. So if you have nitrite in your tank this must be accounted for. Running the nitrite kit first will give you that reading and then subtracting the nitrite from the nitrate readings gives you the true nitrate reading. I believe this is why Hach sells both nitrite and nitrate in the same kit for marine tanks. They also include ammonia and pH for the price. Not a bad deal. ;)

I didn't read the instructions included, but they may detail this in how to use the marine kit. :)
 
Yep, the standard is worth it, to compare the kit to to make sure it is accurate. If the kit does not read the standard properly, we can tell you how to figure your true results using the kit as is once you know any discrepancy in the reading.

You most likely have to account for any nitrite readings first in tank water, but in the standard there will be no nitrite as far as I understand. ;)

When you use the standard you listed, make sure you use the 4.43 mg/L as NO3- to compare the kits with using the test kits. So the standard has 4.43 ppm nitrate. ;)

Hey Cliff,
what do you mean? I don't quite understand. The standard solution is listed as 1mg/L.

Also, for the color look up for example on the Elos, do I hold the test tube just on top of the white part of the chart or do I put for the test tube on the white part of the chart? When the tube touch the chart, the color is darker.
 
1 mg/L is for N-NO<sub>3</sub> (the weight of the nitrogen only). Hobbyists tend to use ppm NO<sub>3</sub>, so multiply by 4.43. :)
