Perhaps. I've actually seen Petsmart sell the larger ones for $1 each. But I think every one of our tanks has a small liner of dead snail shells. I think my only crab (a scarlett hermit) changes shells two or three times a week.
Nevermind. I got in touch with Aquatic Marine earlier and they should have what I need. They're going to be able to special order the blenny I want, too, so I'll just pick up everything I need there on Wednesday. *happy*happy*
From the price I see on some of the shells, you would just be better off buying some more snails. The hermits will eat the snails and use their shells.

The problem I'm having is that I bought about 30 hermits and now the largest ones are about the size they're growing out of the shells that I had available...but not yet big enough for the shells that stores sell.
I may have to look at getting some snails that are medium sized. I had one astria shell that a crab took up residence in, but that's not a cheap price to buy shells at though.
I was at Coral Reef today and they had a tub with a few thousand empty shells. No price tag on it, but I don't think they'd hesitate to come up with one...
Not really. In mollusks like snails, slugs & clams, sentience is highly unlikely based on what I've read. You can't really be 'mean' to something that can't feel pain. Mug away.
But I like the snails. The bigger ones are kind of cute in a cow-like sort of way. I get irritated when I see a hermit toppling one over and taking them out. *sigh*
