Where have my Banded Gobies gone???

Hello everyone ,it's been awhile that i have asked for suggestions on RC, but I have a small thought. This weekend I bought 2 small banded gobies and introduced them to my tank. They seemed very happy and immideately started borrowing in the substrate. I have about 4 inches of aragolive sand. I have not seen them since. My question is, "is this normal?" The hole that they built has been covered somewhat by a lowmower blenny who like to hang around the area where they built the hole. I have not seen them since. Do you think that maybe the cave gave way and they became trapped and died? or could they have moved to a new home? When is the best time to check and see if they swim around? Any Ideas?? Thanks in advance.all

I'll give you the same advice I gave the guy looking for his neon gobies.
Don't pull your LR apart looking for them.
Give them time and they will come out.
Check for signs such as holes or sand pushed up around the bottom of LR.

Feeding time might spark some interest.

72gals is alot of water for small gobies to hide and play. :D Covering a hole with alittle bit of sand is not a big deal. They can get out usually.

**EDIT- Flashnight at night with a red lense, or a transparent red glass/acrylic. You might see them then. Some banded gobies are nocturnal, saw one myself the other day in an LFS upside down under a rock, a nocturnal species.

Goodluck :P

If you move rock, you risk burying them where they can't escape. If a lawnmower was messing around with that area, they probably moved. I have two redbandeds, Raspberry and Teacake. Teacake, the female, twice Raspberry's size, dived under a rock and disappeared for nearly 3 weeks where I couldn't find her: when I did find her, she'd taken up with the watchman---and now she's left him for the red firefish. She's getting much bolder about feeding now, and Raspberry is still hovering. But such brightly colored and very little fish are also very cautious little fish, which is how they survive. ;)

Thanks, I'll keep on looking for them. I hope they get comfortable because I really was looking forward to owning a pair. Thanks again.

i have a friend with one that had it over two weeks, never saw it and just considered it to be dead. Well one day during feeding two weeks later, there he comes out of the rock to eat. give them a little time

I have a pair of zebra gobies and they dart into a nook under a rock and bury themselves in the sand... You will not see them and think they jumped out of the tank. Only to see them within a few hours or days... Put some mysis shrimp in the tank at feeding and they should come out... Just make sure you stand back from the tank.

I had a Rainfordi Goby . The first day I had him he simply disappeared. I assumed that he died and was carried away by my serpent star. One day, six months later, my wife says, "Oh, I am glad you replaced that cute little goby." I could not believe it. It was still in the tank and looking healthy. This was in a relatively small 75G. How it could go without being seen by anyone for six months I will never know. I suppose it just stayed behind the wall of rocks and coral and fed exclusively on pods.

Bottom line: give it a week or two before you get really worried. Most gobies can dig themselves out of a sand bed, as long as a rock hasn't been moved over them.
