A non-toxic 100% silicone sealant is NAPA brand (part #765-1336)

many reefers have used it for years

I do not need you to tell me how to do a search. Considering that no information-- that is valid, (MSDS and Product Data Sheet) is available online for this product, it is a pointless search, as well as a pointless post.

it was a dig at the coment of " I don't need you to show me how to do a search" as how that coment was posted was in fact demeaning.

I in no way wish to debate with uncleof6 in any way the merits of a product, was just stating the fact that the info is out there and easy enough to find in a search.

I dont meen to disagree with you but I have use GE I on several tank builds with never one problem . I am not trying to start any thing, all I wanted was a place to buy black silicon. Didnt know this thread would go this way

Neither did I, but it happens when peoples opinions get in the way of facts. And the fact is GE Silicone I is not a suitable silicone for use in a tank, (specifically stated on the label) and from all appearances, neither is the NAPA (Permatex-- it helps when the make is known), and since you asked to find "black" silicone, there was even less of a reason to bring up the NAPA part number, as it is a clear silicone, as is GE Silicone I. Additionally, both are sealants, not adhesives, and for building a tank-- you need an ADHESIVE to hold the glass together.

Anecdote is not a good reason to use any product in an aquarium. Many posts ask: "Is this reef safe" or words to that affect, to the point of being "obsessive compulsive" about it. Yet, when it comes to having to source a material somewhere other than Home Depot, that OC seems to go out the window. The fact that many use it, yet know little or nothing about it, yearns for more info on the material-- or an indicator of what we should be using in our tanks.

Strength wise, those that have not worked with an adhesive silicone before, are shocked by the difference between a "sealant" and an "adhesive" silicone: For the most part, they are very different materials.

From a toxicity standpoint, I would think most reasonable individuals will not put a material that has/does contain petroleum distillates in their tank, but seems many don't seem to care about that. (Both GE Silicone I and II)

So there is the FDA approval, that can guide us with these materials. Approval for food contact, good to use in aquarium. DAP Household sealant @ Home Depot, formerly called Aquarium Sealant: FDA approved for food contact-- Manufactured by Dow Corning (not black.) AGA brand labeled for aquarium use available in black. (small tanks-- GE/Momentive does not sell silicone for repackaging so it is not GE Silicone I, as rumored, unless they recently started doing so........)

Dow Corning 732, and 999A (both available in black) FDA approved. Momentive/GE RTV100 series (RTV103 black) and IS800 series (IS803 black) both FDA approved. RTV100 series being preferred for tank building.

Anecdote is what it is, but just because you are at the dog races, it don't mean you have to eat alpo: steak is not that hard to find.

Regards,

Jim

I had looked over the data sheets last night, which is why I stated above, it is not much better than GE Silicone I strength wise. 170/218 psi compared to RTV100 series @ 400 psi. Adhesve strength not being listed indicates it is too low. With the RTV100 series it is listed at 40 lbs/in. IIRC Dow Corning comes in at 333.6 psi, but the adhesive strength is not listed, but works ok for sumps and such. Neither of the permatex products appear to be FDA approved, however the RTV100 series is also USDA approved.

Lots of things work for different people, that is the point of this website. Everybody has an opinion. There are only a few people on here that I personally have never ever doubted and they are chemists and scientists. There really isn't a need to keep pointing out that each of you was right. I really wish there was a passive aggressive filter on this website...
