I know this is a bit off topic, but i know of a couple guys n here personally that are boaters. Looking to get point to a couple good boating forums. Stuff for repairs, DIY, tips, etc. I know of thehulltruth and iboats. Any others?

I recently picked up a boat would like to get into a couple good communities similar to reefcentral/FMAS. :)

Florida Sportsman has a nice forum. Also, I love microskiff.com if you are into the skinny water ultra light weight ultra shallow stuff :)

Whoops missed that, sorry.

Myself and a few co-workers have used thehulltruth for diy repair help. That is usually my first go to.

Thanks guys. Any one on here got some tips for me?

Looking to repair a couple small soft spots in the deck. Based on some tips from the guy i bought the boat from he said to stick with 1708 biaxial sheets for the deck. When replacing the bulk head between the bilge and storage locker i will need to tab in the bulkhead. Do i need to buy fiberglass tape or can i just cut strips of the 1708 and use that as the tape?

My recommendation, take pictures of everything you want to do, then walk into Fiberglass Coatings Inc. across from bass pro shops on Ravenswood Road. Those guys know everything about everything, won't sell you crap you don't need, and will tell you how to do it right. Best part is, they're about half the price of West Marine on alot of items. I completely restored my 17' Siren, (1976), and they were a huge help. I even took a couple of their seminars on fiberglass repair and rolling and tipping paint. They actually talked me into NOT doing that. Instead of selling me $500-600 worth of paint, or gel coat materials, they actually talked me into using Brightsides by Interlux for the paint, it's a tough 1 part polyeurethane paint that sprays beautifully. The paint came out mirror smooth! Great people.

Soft spot repair really depends on how big the spot is, and if there's anything structural. Small soft spots, you can usually just drill out a series of holes through the outer skin, but all the through the deck, let the core dry out, than saturate with thinned epoxy until it won't suck up anymore. Fill, fair and gel coat when the epoxy is cured. Anything more substantial generally gets into grinding off the outer skin of fiberglass/gel coat and removing the rotted core....then filling in new core and refiberglassing the whole repair area. Going to be work, and best to avoid the heat of the day to prevent the epoxy from kicking off and curing too fast.

Almost forgot, yes you can cut strips of the fiberglass cloth for tabs. Be sure and use a really sharp knife to get a clean cut that won't pull apart the cloth. The tape is generally easier to work with for tabbing IMO.

Thanks for the input guys.

Ludwigia73, got any pics of your boat how it looks now? I also plan on giving it a fresh coat of white paint on the inside as well. Any recommendations on which paint and type to use for that? And can i use the same primekote primer i will use on the hull to prime the gunnels and deck?

Thanks.

A pair of heavy dudy scissors work well
