Which fish should I try first to breed?

I really want to try and breed mandrin's or pygmy angels.....
which will be better to start with?

Also, is there an easier pelagic spawner fish?

BTW
I know that Dieter Brockmann wrote an amazing book about breeding angels (dwarf), I only found it in english... anyone knows if there is an english version?

THANKS!

Both are equally complex.
I'd say you spend alot of time learning how to grow lots and lots of copepods, since this will be your major sticking point.
Once you've gotten past the copepod production, then its up to you.
Frank Baensch uses tall black 55 gal plastic drums for his angel breeding, andother use smaller tanks for mandarins
Have you raised other fish before, such as clowns & dottybacks

I know, I plan on reading as much as possible on different types of rotis and copes (short term).
I know Frank found a very small roti species which was in the right size for the angels newborns, I'm guessing he won't be willing to give me any starter cultures? :rolleye1: (Not that I'm going to blame him...)
I have so many ideas about this subject, and a few more on how to get a good sized (small enough) rotis or copids....
I would like to just sit for the next couple of months and read all I can about anything that could help me better deal with it.

If you have any good things you think I should read, Then plese let me know!

reefers had spawns of mandarins and pigmies in smaller spaces then that.
I will probably start first with the mandarins, I will get them a 38g tank with just cleaning crews and cleaner shrimp.
The tank sole purpose will be breeding.
the tank will be : 60cm(23.6") long , 40cm(15.7") wide and 60cm(23.6") tall...
I think that should do.

I'm going to concentrate solely on breeding.

But first I have alot of reading to do in the 3-4 coupole of months.

I really think it could help alot of ppl if all the old posts where here and not just the last 6-7 becasue I really love to just click on the "Views" bottom and then just look through some old but very popular threads, It really helps because you just find things that you forgot about or didn't think about, right in front of you and then you read about it.....

UB-
no frank didn't find a rotifer species, he found a copepod species (he ID'd it in an article in FAMA), and as of today raising copepods esp the right species, w/ the right nutritional profile is the holding point for alot of fish. There are lots of scientists in many hatcherys trying to figure this same puzzle out.
We just don't know what their first foods are.
So what does frank do now- he sienes the oceans, and field collects pods for his larvae. So does martin Moe- Martin just reported succesful raising of yellow-headed jawfish- how-by using daily sienes to field collect pods.

So I can't emphasize enough how good you have to be w/ pods, you choose two of the most challenging fish fry to feed. As of today, no one has reported any success (even limited) w/ angel and mandarin using rotifers, not even "ss" strain.
Okay- off soap box....

Now i'm not trying to dissaude you from doing this, just the opposite, In fact I commend you in your decision to mariculture fish. I will just ask you to not jump in over your head first, so you don't get frustrated. If you routinely bred clowns, and dotty backs and understand the ins-n-outs of daily care of fish fry, then by all means learn the next level. Because pelagic eggs and fry are the next level of complexity

Frank didn't grow this copepods? he just did a daily/weekly collecting of pods and then fed them to the larvae?
If that is true then its really sad, it will make it a near impossible attempt for me.:hmm2: :hmm2:

So you do think I should start with easier fish, like clowns?

All those old posts still exist here ;) You just have to change your default view. At the bottom of the forums post listing is a dark blue bar with a couple of drop down boxes, the last one changes how many days back you can view. Just set it to view from the beginning and you'll have a ton of old posts to read :)
