Which tang?

I'm looking for a gentle giant for my 625g and was thinking about either a Vlamingi or Unicorn tang? Anyone have experiences or care to share thoughts? I know some will say why those two? If you have ever seen a full grown Vlamingi then you know why. I personally have never seen a full grown unicorn tang but I'm sure they are equally beautiful.

I'm very partial to unicorn tangs. Such an awesome fish when fully grown, and make quite the statement. I've seen both, and that's the way I'd go.

Fowleris are pretty timid as well, and their color only gets better with size...

Thanks for the reply! I have a Fowleri on the list but wanted to add it later down the road since I'm not 100% sure about their aggression level.

I think the Vlamingi is a prettier fish. The Unicorn is cool looking, but is really just a dull gray fish. The purple spots on the Vlamingi can make for an eye catching beauty.

I'v seen a small shoal of unicorn tangs while snorkeling in Oahu. They are definitely big but the colors aren't as nice as fully grown Vlamingi.

Whenever my family goes to The Rainforest Cafe at Disney (the only restaurant we eat at every time we are in Disney and thats because of the fishtanks... and the nachos appetizer) I stare at the unicorn tangs for a good 20 minutes before my wife snaps me back to reality. SO, my vote is for a unicorn. I heart them.

I saw a full grown unicorn a few months ago when we took our granddaughter to the aquarium. Amazing!
I wish I felt I had the room for one, but my tank has another purpose.
I vote unicorn!

What a wonderful choice you have to make. You can't lose.

However, I have to go all third party rogue on you, and vote for a large blonde naso with good color. They are very peaceful for the most part and if you get a nice one, quite colorful, just keep lots of nori handy.

There will be a blonde naso but they stay relatively small compared to a unicorn or vlamingi

My 6" fowleri is a model citizen. Leaves all fish alone and hangs out by himself, always just cruising.
I had a 10" vlamingi in my old 800g. He was nice too, but bland other than their pastel purple spots

I'd vote for a Blue Unicorn Naso brevirostris. It's such a cool fish and way more colorful than the standard unicorn.

If it's between vlamingi and unicorn, I'd say vlamingi all the way.

I suppose I could get both but with a blonde naso too I worry that I will have 3 fish that can get close to two feet, which could cause unwanted stress. Trying to get this figured out since this will be the next fish(s)in QT

I was also going to suggest a giant naso, but you got that covered.

A store I occasionally visit in Orange County has an 800 gallon tank with a huge Vlamingi. It really is almost bizarre seeing a fish like that - you forget you are looking at a "tank fish." So I vote Vlamingi.

What about a big old wrasse? At the Aquarium of the Pacific they had some really cool (big) wrasses: bananas, red coris and moon wrasses. Any of those on the list?

If I get a wrasse it will be a broomtail, problem is finding one that's not 8-10" already and 700$! For some reason I'm not much of a wrasse guy

One year ago before I started my new tank I thought about the same question like you now. I discussed this in my country forum. One guy told me don't introduce such a big fish because your big tank looks small with such a big fish. I never thought about that before and have to say he is right. My largest fish was a full grown cross hatch trigger and just the half of a vlamengi. So I understand what he meant. I prefer max size of 30cm. The clarionensis I sell when they get bigger
