Which traits do the offspring get from their parents

Specifically clownfish: I am wondering which triats do the offspring get from their father and mother, i.e. they get full bars from the father and coloration from the mother.

its debatable at best because they are hermaphroditic in nature. it was believed that body shape and color is supposed to be passed by the female and the baring from the male. this has been proven to be untrue. some traits are to strong and will be passed regardless, like the cheek spine or maroon color in Premnas hybrid's. you can make it darker or lighter but its still a base maroon color.

miss baring from rearing (common) wont pass to offspring because it was not genetic. this is why you see mis barred captive breed parents have normal barred children. however genetic mis barring like in the case of snowflakes or picasso's will pass to some of the offspring whale most others will be normally barred.

generally you get some that will look like the father, some that look like the mother, and some that will be a mixture of the two (think a.leucokrano). just start with quality broodstock and you will be ok (no hunchbacks, shorty's, etc)

Hi Guys, I need Help!!! 2 months ago my clarkii's decided to start breeding after 4 years.

They have spawned 4 times and eggs hatched again last night.
Water conditions are perfect no nitrate amonia ph of 8.2 salt 21 temp about 24.5.
They laid the eggs 3 nights after last eggs hatched so have laid eggs 11 days after previous. This hatching somewhere in the region of 400 fry.

I set up a smaller tank and copied water perameters of main tank and transferred the fry over when they hatched last night. Tank set upwith gentle airstone, no filter blacked out sides and left tank light on.
Woke up this morning half the fry were dead. Came in from work now thats about 14 hours after hatching and all bar 4 fry are dead.
I cant see what i am doing that is wrong. I have some fry food supplied by ZM systems and i put some in the tank last night and this morning. I know that they are not supposed to start eating for the first couple of days surviving of their yolk sack, but thougght possibly with the mother producing them as quickly as she is maybe they hadnt developed yolk sack and were hungry as previous fry hatchings died at similar timeframe.
the fry hatch 8 days after being laid.
Hep lol what am i doing wrong kind regards to all aide

generally you start them on rotifiers, depending on the species they will feed on those for 1-3 days before they are able to eat prepared food. getting a feeding response without live foods at first is the hard part. yes just prepared food has been done but there is generally only a few percent of fry that survive. compare to greenwater/ rotiifier sucess that is 80% or better survival.

the yoke sack is gone in less than 24 hours, and they will begin eating rotifiers a few hours after hatch. if your not tinting the water with phyto or paste its possible they fry cannot see the food you are adding. another thing to check is how much air your putting into the tank, it might make it to hard for the fry to swim. they die from exhaustion if there is to much flow from the air stone.

are you using freshly mixed water or are you blending some with the parents water? also poor parent nutrition will cause mortality on fry and small clutches (sounds like one of your problems).

try feeding the parents 3-5 times a day minimum with a good mixture of frozen and pellet, or just pellet. egg mass has been reported to we smaller when fed only frozen. using new salt water and staying with a greenwater technique you will have sucess
