who DOES NOT cover intakes for anenomes???

just wondering...i know it's recommended but i keep trying to convince myself as long as intakes are up high, away from LR, the chance of an anenome getting sucked in is low. i have 3 TUNZE streams and 4 MJ1200's. none covered. getting RBTA wed. not sure if i should definately cover. i really don't want to cut back flow w/ covers. the pumps are already an eyesoar without covers. if i could find some kind of black mesh covering, i might do it.

I didn't - until one morning woke up to pureed BTA. Now all are covered. I use black sponge, cut a hole in it for the piece to be covered. They need to be rinsed out occaisionally.

that's easy to do for a MJ but how about a big TUNZE stream...?

One of the modes of locomotion for E quadricolor anemones is to release from the substrate, blow their pedal disc up like a sail and float around in the currents. The vast majority of time they move at night and I've had anemones move in excess of six feet in a single night.

Point is: find a way to cover your intakes... or, at least, don't act surprised when you wake up to find it dying, stuck in your pump, with it's tentacles pureed and strewn throughout your tank.

I don't know what the tunze looks like, but if the sponge doesn't work that plastic cross stitch canvas mentioned in the other thread and on Karen's anemone site may come in black. You can use black zip ties to keep it on. I think Karen may have some pics that could be helpful.

^^^It does. I have used it for countless other aquarium applications, like a handy overflow mesh, as well as an anchor for my fw planted tank.

the black plastic mesh sounds best. i just asked an arts and craft center by me. it comes in all colors. cheap too. i guess i'll do it even though i may be cutting back on output some but the peace of mind is worth it i guess.

i did on my mj's but when i switched to tunze.. they are now uncovered. havent come up with a creative way to cover them they are like baseballs, not so easy.

My gbta sat on a tunza in december. I caught it immediately, but it chopped off 2 tenicles really fast. I moved my tunzes to the front corners away from all rock., so unless they swim or crawl up the glass Ill be ok,. but id still like to cover them.

this mesh i'm talking about comes in 12X12 sheets at an arts/craft store. plastic, flexible and easy to cut, the inlet for a TUNZE stream is what, like 2" wide but goes all the way around? u only need a strip long enough to go around inlet slits and wide enough. it's real name is vinyl canvas or plastic mesh at arts and crafts sites and stores.

Here a picture of two that got sucked down a standpipe overflow in a 25g tub. 1" PVC pipe with a standard plastic strainer. I'd been cleaning the tub so I had a filter sock on it. When I didn't see it in the tub I checked the sock and there were 5 pieces of RBTA attached to the sides. Another chunk at the bottom of the sock.

Still have 4 pieces that are attached to a pile of rubble in the tank.

Keep in mind these pictures are only 6-7 days after it happened. I don't always come to my shop on the weekends. Don't have any idea why it didn't plug the drain and overflow the tub and drain the sump.

I have never lost an anemone due to a pump or overflow. I have had splits and hot pink anemones occur from my RBTAs though.

perhaps the black rain gutter guard plastic mesh material found at home depot and other home improvement centers .
i use hagen powerheads with the hagen quick filter housing minus the actual quick filter pad . i attach the p.h. to an osci-wave ( works well it's ashame that the osci-wave is out of production ) .

You can get black sponges from Drs Fosters. They come with the JbJ nano cubes.
