I am leaving this site now and sticking to Masc and thescmas, at least at our sites we can talk with out having threads closed. Excuse my language but I think they are all being jerks. The power has gone to there heads and obviously they cant handle being Moderators if they throw "tantrums" and delete peoples postings, and close threads. It has been said many times by many different people. Now they are losing many people on there site. I really do not care anymore because its not worth it. I have been on for like max 2 months and I am so sick of it. Go ahead and delete this thread, it just proves my point even more... While your at it if you really want take away my posting priveledges, I couldn't give a darn.

The thing about RC is that it enforces its rules and that's what makes people upset, sometimes speaking your mind on a privately owned reef forum isn't appropriate and that's why it's locked. I thing RC does a great job keeping the site on track and making it a place for people to come together and discuss reef related material.

Ok.

There were basically two threads closed, subsequent closes were due to that same persons trying to re-open the discussion.

I'm pretty irritated by it as well but let's look at what really happened.

#1. A user jumped all over a moderator for editing SOMEONE ELSES post. That moderator issued an infraction. An infraction is feature of this version of our forum software and serves as a warning. They automatically expires and were completely appropriate. That user got his panties in a bunch and initiated a tantrum.

#2. A user, who has been violating our User Agreement in regard to our commercial posting restrictions was reported by a member of your club. A further review of the situation showed that the abuse had been going on for some time. Infractions were given, and appropriate, which resulted in a temporary loss of some functionality for the user. Like in the case of #1, those have expired.

I'm sorry that you feel that enforcing the same rules that everyone else has already agreed to is too troublesome. That said, I've granted your Christmas wish.

Cheers

Every thread that I have seen that was locked was either a violation of the rules, someone trying to push their views on how RC should be ran, or a rant threads which is usually a result of a private message that was sent to them from a moderator and their pride makes them feel they have to let everyone know how RC is so screwed up but usually it shows quite the opposite. It shows the ignorance of the person trying to get the last word.

Whine Whine whine.

The rules are pretty simple. If a thread gets closed and you really don't have a clue why does it make more sense to open a new thread and wait until a mod spots it to get your answer or, I realize it's a stretch here, PM the mod and ask them?

I do agree it would be a better result all around if the mods would post a quick reason why the thread was closed, like they do when someone violates the 50/90 rule. But is that any reason to get your panties in a bunch to the point you quit the board?

who's got that animation of the guy beating a dead horse? i think that is the most apporpriate response to this. who cares? the whining and the bickering is why most of the great "old-timers" arent associated with us anymore. can we please move on now?

I was one of the complainers of late.

My point was that I started a thread on the "responsible reefkeeping" forum:

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1671010

It went on for 5 months & 25 pages.

The very last post was from a moderator that was participating in the discussion (Billsreef). Who hadnt seen anything wrong with any postings and had not issued any warnings.

Then suddenly the thread is closed with no explanation whatsoever.

so for the "who cares? ... can we please move on now?"

See how you would like months of your time & technical discussion locked for no apparent reason.

Stu

Stu,
What was the response of the MOD...?
Sounds strange. Did any ask why they locked it?
I have not seen any problems.. RC has been a great resource for me over the many years...
When I have the money I hope to send some to help support this huge community as it is not cheap to run, even with volunteers.

Are there any guidelines on what could be talked or not talked about. My question is what makes a mod close a thread so i know what to look for from what i just seen politics are one thing that can not be discussed here on this board. And for the threads that are closed were they closed due to one persons views or are they discussed amongst the mods and then they take action

If you want to discuss that political issue PM me and I can give you a link where me and mike (greenbean) are engaging in a civil debate on it. You can allow those kind of discussions on a board with a couple dozen members following it but when you get a couple thousand it can break into a civil war pretty fast. I can give you examples of that too. How many people do you think are following this board? I love debating political issues but to do so you would either have to institute an anything goes policy or triple the number of moderators to keep people in line.

Clearly there is some flexibility, but overall it is pretty easy for the standard user to follow.

I would definitely like clarification on Stu's issue, though. He is a member placing $ in the pockets of the owners. He deserves the respect of any other customer of a service. So far he is not getting it and that is disappointing.

I disagree. Where does it say we are a customer? The board asks you to sign a TOS and the mods are asked to keep everyone to that agreement.

I am sure there are tons of things going on behind the scenes (pms and what not) that you or I am not aware.

here's the users agreement. I think that the mods close a thread based on the user agreement.

But like Stu's, maybe the thoughts were that the thread was heading down a path and turn into a political debate, and it might have been Billsreef experience that it was heading down that dead-end. The whole thread was teetering on political view without actually coming out and saying it (the passive grey area). It was done very professionally and with respect, it's just hard to talk about that subject and not keep it unbiased. So I guess someone crossed the grey line, and got it locked.

I P'med Billsreef and he said that it was another Mod that got a report of "someone made a religious reference" so "The mod that got that report just opted to close the thread."

I dont even see what "religious reference" they are talking about.

The rules say nothing about "religious references".

Merry Christmas! - Oops thread closed ;-)

In Bill's personal opinion the thread had been doing very well & staying away from political bickering ( which got the original thread closed ).

Stu

I have been here for quite sometime, and have seen a lot of threads closed, and people ticked off at the mods. I get that the mods have a hard job, anybody enforcing a policy does, but I really do wish that they would state the reason that they closed it. I recently posted about a new tank that I am getting and asked for lighting help. Help and congratulations came from all angles, and some of the posts were deleted without any reason as to why. I sent a PM to the guy whose thread was deleted because I assumed it was a mistake. I still got the information that would have been posted. its my belief that the majority of people on here never read the terms and conditions of anything that they click the box to. IF we were to get a reason as to why a particular post was deleted or a thread closed, it would help all of us be more aware of the rules and an easy reminder of the terms that we agreed to.
