I just want to know if your G Smithii is active?
mine does not seem to be, he puts half is body out his hole, that bout it, sometimes darts at the sight of me. I have seen him out once and when he saw me he crapped himself.
I have had him for 1 week now.
I did own others but none shy like this one.

It's likely that it's just getting used to it's surroundings. It took my wennerae a couple of weeks to claim the tank as it's own.

I have had a G. Smithii for a very short time and have moved him several times to different tanks. He is now in his own 12G Eclipse. Each time I have moved him it has taken a while for him to come out of his hole and just recently he must have molted since he stayed locked up for almost two weeks. I haven't figured out how to upload pictures to the gallery yet but will post a few pictures once I do.

they spend 70%+ in the hole.

then they go grocery shopping.

pick up a couple hermits, take them to the hole.

grab a snail or two, take them back to hole.

bash a mynthrax crab in front of bob for lunch (only seen it once but this was fantastic. imagine the battle of a 3in mantis battlin a crab about 1.5 in across)

go home. take evertbody inside. smash away, peek out and flex on anybody who looks in the hole.

thats a very exciting day for Bane. he usually gets into this routine for about a 7-10 days, about a week after a molt.

then he calms down and chills for another week and molts again.

Bane molts almost once a month:D his size and color are both improving.

but the coolest thing about my G.Smithii's behavior is that he tolorates 2 fish and a peppermint shrimp.

so a g.smithii usually allows you to have a mantis shrimp, in a bada$$ nano reef.

at least thats how i went about it.

Here is a picture of Marty. I have him in a 12G Eclipse with live rock, live sand, one yellow-bellied damsel and a few astreas, margaritas, and blue-legged hermits. The margaritas are there primarilly as a food source since I know he can break thru their shells. I thought the astreas would be safe and would be part of a permanent cuc but Marty pounded on one yesterday and managed to break it open. He kept turing it upside down and beat on the bottom of the shell until he cracked it. I call him a he, but I haven't actually figured that out yet. He is a little bashful when it comes to getting pictures of his undersides.
