skimmer freak
ok i have been using it myself since the start of current tank, little over a year ago. i have always gotten the plastic bag's of oceanic, yes i know not for resale. anyways, my tank had always done very well till about 6 months ago and i just couldnt keep sps anymore, they would bleach off and fast, and any new colonies or frags would do the same thing, now i do have 5 piece's that made it through it all. ok now there are 4 other reefers around me, 2 of use use same water company and other 2 are different towns, now all of use had been using or had switched out to the oceanic salt and once they switched had started to have the same problem. all my levels are fine, mag alk cal, ph , lighting is more then sufficient, and so is skimmer. this has had me stumped for some period until my neighbor said he tank is getting better now, switched salts. so do you think it is a good chance we got a bad batch of salt ? anyway i could contact them and see if any other complaints from around the u.s ?

I've used Oceanic Natural Sea Salt Mix with RO/DI water for well over a year now. I buy 200 Gallon bucket at a time tho. I have no problems.

Are you using RODI water or tap water? Have you been using the same water source from day 1 ? Is there anything else you changed in your weekly/daily routine? What exactly are all of your water parameters? What equipment and setup are you using? The more info you give the more people will be able to help you. I highly doubt its the salt but its not impossible.

yes i use rodi, been in hobby 6 yr's and never had anything like this happen to me. i do get the 150g bags, not the buckets. nothing else has changed in what i do, i rarely dose because my ato is filled with kalk water, ph doesnt really shift, my sig has my equiptment other then not using the bk skimmer anymore, and the other 3 guys having the same problem arent new to the hobby either.. like i said once the previous bag ran out i got another and since then things have slowly been coming around for me, and the other 3 guys switched salts and tanks have been coming around also

I have been using oceanic salt since may and have had no problems whatsoever. I buy the 200g buckets though.

I use oceanic salt and found that if I didn't let it sit with a powered and heater for a few days before hand that the Corals seemed to have issues. Loss of color receded polyps. I started aging the water longer and seen a turn around in a few water changes. At the time once a month.

had gotten the bags { not buckets } that were for store use, and 4 of us had them and all 4 of us started losing corals, sps peeling and dying chalices ect, 4 different people, 3 different water sources, 4 tanks all of use ro\di, ect. none of us are new to the hobby, once each of us switced salts our tanks tred coming back to life

I also use the buckets of Oceanic for a reef, for about 4 years now. I try to open a new barrel and put 1/3 into an old barrel, seal both, and roll both across the floor, back and forth, to be sure the salt hasn't shaken out or sorted certain minerals during shipment. I've always been suspicious that could happen with any salt mix.

Certainly manufacturing accidents could happen: headlines are full of grocery store recalls; but I've heard nothing until this. I will do it with even more attention now! The fact this is all one source, and probably all one lot from the same shipment, as I think I understand it, would point to a manufacturing accident.

If you could make up some saltwater with it and immediately run a battery of water tests for salinity @ 1/2 cup per gallon, alk, cal, mg, etc, it would be a big help.

I also use the 150 gallon bags (not for resale) and I have not had any similar problems. Perhaps you just got a bad batch or there is some other unknown variable at work. Wish I could help more.

why are these bags not for resale? I recently bought a bag becuase the guy let me have it cheap. I noticed it said not for resale I thought he got it free so he gave it to me cheap.

Been using Oceanic over 3 years. No problems at all.

Water for waterchanges is made 12-24 hours in advance.

I use the 200 Gallon Buckets.

with 4 of us having had the same issue, personally i have been in the hobby 6 years, other guy over 30 years and the other 2 almost 3 years. i ran check as all of us did. levels were good on mix and checked tank levels, for cal alk and mag. not too much light as ive ben using this light before the situation and the other 3 have had their same light as well, like i said nothing was done any different then before other then once i started a new bag and had the issue's. one of the guys problem started to clear up and stuff started growing back, after going to the bucket, then store didnt have anymore so he got another bag and poof back to same stuff of losing sps. other guy switched to esv and his tank came back to life and last guy switched out to reef crystals and i myself switched out to d&d and havent lost anything since. this is the reason i point to the salt. btw when i make up water for change i let it mix for over 24 hr's
