I would like to start a group of ANCHOR members that only use NSW To do water changes ? When I get my tank up and , running again (very soon I hope ) I'm going NSW all the way . I used NSW for large water changes , before I took the tank down , and everything in the tank loved it . Collection is a little work , but fun , and adnup helped me ,so it was a fun day . I would like to also set up field trips , for collecting snails , and other local reef safe things . So ANCHOR members please give me some feed back on this subject . Ted

Ted,

All I have ever used is NSW, from original tank fill-up to and including weekly water changes. My current setup (92 corner) is going on 2 years with no problems and good growth. Biggest issues I have had was with the bad red tide of a couple of years ago - the water offshore up to 20 miles was tainted - the only water that had no red tide was the grass flats right outside our house.

I have a hard time getting away up to your neck of the woods. If anyone wanted to do a field trip down this way (north Pinellas), I would be happy to serve as tour guide/captain.

Thanks alfa1023 , We would love to have you up to our neck of the woods some time . I would love to have a guided tour around the grass flats down there some time . Do you have any local critters in your tank ? Ted

Ted,

I did have a few small hermits and snails, but it seems as though the blue leg hermits (somehow the one I had has multiplied) have won the shell wars.

I have had some peppermint shrimp (sourced via my stone crab traps) from time to time. But they had to battle the fish and my CBS to survive. The CBS is now gone, so I hope to have better luck with the peppermints this next year.

I have dropped a tiny pistol shrimp or two in also, but not sure if they became food before finding a hole. They were so small, not sure if you would hear their claw snaps if they were alive.

At the last meeting at Steve's house in Tarpon, I brought a couple of the Gulf variety of Arrow Crabs to share - have not heard if they have survived or not. These too are sourced via my stone crab traps. I had not previously tried these in my tank because of the CBS, but will this fall/winter.

And finally I had a small one of our local brown starfish in the tank for almost two years. I say "had" because I have not seen him in awhile (not totally unusal though, would often go a month without seeing him and then he would appear).

We have lots of urchins (purple and longspine), the occassional seahorse, snails, crabs, etc. out here in the bay.

alfa , How many stone crab traps do you run ? any octopus in your traps ? I have heard that they go into stone crab traps , to eat the crabs . Ted

Ted,

Ran 7 traps last year. I only have traps for our personal use - as you may know you can have 5 traps per fishing license as a recreatinal stone crabber. Plan to up it to 10 traps this next season.

No octopus, but my traps are in the bay (so that I can get to them in my flats boat even in the typical winter winds). Have a couple of buddies with traps out in the Gulf - they do get octopus sometimes, but the octopus usually slide out of the trap when you are pulling them up.

If I had my way, I'd only use NSW. I just don't have the means to do it. I actually think all corals would benefit a great deal from NSW.

I would love to have a tank of just NSW and lots of natural local critters...especially on my budge at school! (I'd want my home tank and school tanks to have it).

If any of you can help me out about getting the water, we'll do whatever we can to repay the generosity. I can offer lots of phyto, rotifers and a couple types of xenia and macros. Hopefully in the future, more. You guys on the water are very fortunate people!

I've been doing NSW on my 55 and prop tank and everything seems to be doing great. I havent had the guts to do it in my main tank yet. But I see that happening in the near future...just gonna keep it a secret from the wifey...:D

The quicker I get my tank set up , The sooner I'll be going out to get water . It's driving me crazy . I will let you know . Ted

We also would love to take part in this and see what a difference NSW can make in a tank. Please keep us posted when you all decide to do this.

How long do you think NSW can be stored?

I have about 15 gals in a tub with an air line bubbling away. I want to go to Vigo and get a 60 gal drum to fill and have enough water so that I dont have to run out every week. I plan on either a power head or the air for movement.

Thanks Jim . Ted

Reefer421 , I'll let you know when I start going out for water again . Ted

Ted your gonna need a barge with all these big tanks in our club.....:D

Adnup,

I have stored NSW for up to 4 weeks without any problem. I store it in 6.6 gal plastic water jugs in the garage. And I do not use either an airpump or circulation pump either. I do pour it through a filter sock before putting it into the tank.

Jim
