Whole house generator

The kohler has the better engine. I'm going with the 20kwh unit. Could go to the 17 but the cost difference is so little why not... Natural gas all the way.

Propane or diesel are really you're best options if you don't have NG. Propane won't last as long during run time but will be less troublesome to store the fuel. Diesel gensets don't run well when not loaded. Do you already have a large propane tank?

How much do they typically cost to install? A few thousand?

I would not do maintenance on my own just for warranty reasons. From what I have read is if you have a failure and cannot prove the maintenance schedule was followed they (most companies) try to say you voided the warranty.

I have an 8k generac with auto transfer switch. It does not do the whole house, only critical circuits and things I want like TV :-) Just think, will there be a situation where you need all the circuits in your house up and running? We have a microwave for cooking so we didn't hook up the stove or oven and that saved tons of money. We also did not hook up the central air, we got a small room unit so we can sleep.

That's what a dealer would tell you about car maintenance. Which is understandable because they make good money on it. They didn't have the grounds to deny my warranty when I showed them my maintenance log book and receipts for oil and filters.

Highly agreed. If full record is kept of maintenance, I'm not sure it would be denied. Definitely something to look into and take into consideration when purchasing.

It would be up to them to prove your maintenance or lack there of was the reason it failed. That isn't going to be easy with a log that follows their recommendations.

Not sure how much it actually costs to install but I assume around 2 grand, maybe I'm off but my electrician didn't seem to think it was a big deal this summer when they updated my circuit breaker. Since I told him my plans he installed a temporary box and the conduit leading to it that would be replaced with the transfer switch come time for install.

Yes, would be up to them if maintenance was up to par or not. Will be interesting to research others experiences with "self" maintenance and warranties.

I was just checking my owners manual and some things they say have done by a certified technician. I wouldn't chance doing that myself and risk voiding the warranty. Just be sure to read the maintenance recommendations. I went to the Generac website, put in my zip code and found someone local that I know is certified by them.
