my favourite reef fish is an Emperor angel. lucky for me my new emperor comes with the new tank. l and number two has to be the Sohal tang...I know this should be the last fish i add but i don't think i can wait that long, thinking of starting with the smallest one i can get my hands on... just like to hear your experiences with this fish

Success really depends on tank size, if your plan is for the 180 in your signiture I would pass on a sohal.

That being said, mine is about 8" now and is pretty well behaved, my purple tang is more aggressive. He has lots of room, and is fed 7+ times a day though.

I have kept Sohal tangs twice, both times in a 300 gallon tank, and had no issues keeping it healthy. Problem was keeping tankmates healthy. First one wasn't too bad but the second one was a holy terror. Never again. Plus fish just gets too big.

Exactly. I had to remove from a larger tank as it started killing fish.

I had mine in a 250gal and I have downsize to a 210 everything is fine he is the king of the tank, if im going to a fish that newbiw would be smaller.

Success?

This is a bullet proof fish.
It just wont die.
The problem is after a while it might show serious aggression towards other fish in particular Acanthurus spp. , but not only.

It is more well equipped than most Surgeon fish, so the results can be dead tank mates.

It can be a real terror, but the lucky ones who gets a peaceful, or nearly peaceful , Acanthurus sohal can really enjoy one of the best looking fish there is.

Your tank is half the recommended size for a sohal.

+1 and tbh, I'd even think twice before keeping one in a 350 long term.

A Sohal in a 180 is asking for disaster, and setting both you and the fish up for failure. These fish grow very fast, and being cramped isn't going to be a good influence on a high-strung swimming set of razors that is already predisposed to having a bad temper. You have a year, two tops, before you start having serious problems IMHO.

next tank after we move 8x4x4 thinking around june 2014 ... the only reason i got the 180 is because i couldn't turn down the deal and its no big deal to move to the new place. I'm sure a 180 should be fine for a small Sohal for a few months.

Then it would be best to wait until you have the tank for the fish. You never know what might happen to prolong the upgrade. In all reality i would be looking more into a 10 x 36 x 24 long term or bigger. You dont need 48 tall not to mention the other problems that deep of a tank entails.

Edit: I dont own a sohal ( have though ) but i do keep a clown tang for almmost 3 years ( acanthurus lineatus ) and they are pretty much the same care level. My new tank is 120 x 36 x 24 and am considering pushing it to 120 x 48 x 30 just to accomadate him.

You have heard. Snorvich is a RC resident fish behavior expert. You are going to put a sohal in a tank that is less desirable. Why ask if you ignore the advice?

I have one in my 220g with no issues whatsoever. He's about 5 inches. I also have a 2 1/2 inch clown tang and again no issues. There were plenty at first but after I reacclimated the clown tang and then intervened in the hierarchy things have been fine. They've been together for a couple of months. The purple tang is boss of the tangs. The sohal doesn't bother any of the tank mates. My bluethroat pair and my green chromis don't take any lip from the sohal. It's a very peaceful tank let alone considering the stocking list. I feed four to five times a day and intervene with any aggression when necessary. I believe this has helped with curbing the aggression.

I also plan on upgrading to a much larger tank - in the 12 foot range. If, for some reason, I am not able to do so when the time comes, I have a number of friends with large enough systems to house the fish. This is something I took into consideration when I purchased the fish.

Judging on the size of your fish and the limited time they have been together, they are pretty young, and its probably too soon to be giving advice on these fish based on your experience. Do you have any additional experience on these fish other than what is listed in this post?
