Been reading up on Hair ALgae removers, and so far everyone goes for
Turbo Snails
Lawn Mower Blenneys
Sea Hares

Have a 29, lightly stocked and kept up with WC, but who is best for my tanks

I am running PhosBan remover and I think I need to Change The bulbs

4 turbos 2 astrea, doing nothing.. Should I use a Sea Hare and return it to my LFS, are their any REEF SAFE Chemicals?

seahares are obligate on filamentous algae, but some species get 2 ft long!As long as you can obtain one of suitable size and can find it a suitable home when its job is done it as my vote

I have a lawnmower blenny and turbo snails and they never make any kind of attempt to eat hair algae. The snails are more interested in eating algae off of the glass than hair algae. The lawnmower blenny loves mysis and nori, but thumbs his nose at hair algae. The only positive about hair algae is my micro stars now have new hiding places. I hate the stuff. The only effective way I have of removing it is bypulling it off live rock by hand.

My red spotted lawnmower blenny has completely irradicated green hair algae from my tank. My concern now is hoping he won't starve.

I would go with a seahare. I had one once and he did a great job for me. Your LFS could more than likely order you a 1-2 incher.

Sea hare, look into getting a dwarf, I had one about 3/4" long, mowed throught the stuff. I also hear freshwater mollies do a great job on it, just slowly acclimate, then return to lfs.

This one should make short work of problem.

I think it really helps to grow those hair algae (cheatomorpha) in in a sump. I have a blenny and yellow tang that took care of everything in the main tank (until all my rocks were covered with coraline algae). I couldn't grow algae in my main tank even if I tried. I've been feeding them nori too now that I have no more algae.

Besides curing what ever is causing your hair algae to grow ( nitrates/ phos ) Sea Hares are good at mowing them down, Big turbos as also great.

rookie quesiton but what's nori? I have an algae blenny in my tank now and he'll only eat what i cut down. He won't mess with the big stuff. Gonna try a sea hare thursday and will be worried about what to feed them once the algae is all gone.

nori= dehydrated sea weed. to get rid of your hair algae is simple use a refugium with chaetomorpha and use ro water on your tank. Thats it! By the way whatever you do dont add a tang to your 29 i am shocked people are throwing out that idea.

to chris4869, how did you encourage the growth of the corraline algae. I've noticed no hair algae will grow on in my tank either. i would love to encourage the spread of it. Does purple up really work. does anybody know if purple up works, i've decided it's the only hair algae solution.

(nasty wendy, loved your response)

No i kno not to put a tang in a 29, I'm about to upgrade my lighting, using some old bulbs,,i kno, bad on my part and ad a Aquaclear 70 as a refugum. Hopefully that will help. I will add a sea hare this weekend.

How do Refugums work?

They just harbor the micro oragnisms ( pods ) and macro algea in a separate area away from predation....

gives pods time to breed and multiply and give macro algea time to grow and take away bad nutrients in your tank while growing and not being eaten by tangs and other inhabitants...
