Why did my Chaeto died

I bought a baseball sized ball of chaeto, should have ordered it from someone on here but I didn't :debi: :deadhorse1:

Looked good for about a week then turned brownish and quickly died
I had it located in my sump witch is about 6 inches deep so overall I had a 6500K daylight aquarium light on it about a foot form the chaeto. Flow was a little low but I didn't think that would have killed it. Is it possible it froze to death in shipping? Or maybe its because I didn't acclimate it? didn't think you had to acclimate plants?

If you keep your tank nutrient-poor, you can't grow chaeto. So basically, if you can't grow it, you don't need it.
