Why do hobbyist have frag tank?

Serious question. :)

Several reasons for me:
- I don't like small frags in my tank, so I let them grow to a certain point before I add them in my display tank
- If anything happens to a coral: knocked into sand, bleaching, stung by another coral, struck by a lighting bolt, whatever, I can let it recover in my frag tank. I'll lower the light, put it to the side. No fish, or inverts to bother it while it recovers
- Additional water volume for my system which helps stabilize parameters
- It's where I first place fish when I buy them. Let's me feed them for a while and strengthen them up before mixing them in with my other fish.
- My tanks packed out so I have to trim my colonies from time to time. I absolutely hate seeing a frag rack inside of my display tank
- Serves as another area for pods to multiply without being eaten just like my refugium. Helps keep my 2 mandarins going

These are off the top of my head, I'm sure I can think of more. I've heard many people over the years state that it's just for selling corals....absolutely wrong

Currently my coral QT. Hopefully will eventually keep my trimmed pieces.

What is your setup for your frag tank?

Self evident, no?

NO!!

A Coral frag tank is a place to put frags....:wavehand:

OP.

There are many reasons
1. easier to get to them and out of your display.
2. fish crabs and snails are not knocking them over.
3. Display tank looks less appealing with frag plugs or frag rack stuck to glass someplace.
4.. Because we look more serious and professional and the Term FRAG TANK makes us sound kewl..

Number 4 should prob be number one.. but well..
5 You can get mushrooms to attach to rocks easier with slower flow and the lack of number 2 and 3 above.

My Reasons.
There are many reasons.

My reasons:
1) I grow all SPS from itty bitty frags, this gives me a chance after QT to keep an eye on them
2) I don't like the looks of frag racks or anything on the sand bed.
3) when my colonies are established, trimming will have to occur.
4) frags have a chance to get a bit bigger and more appealing before hitting the DT.
5) another added plus is more water volume = more stability if running correctly.

Like others I can't stand seeing frags in my tank and I will never have a frag rack in my display. It's a display tank not a yard sale with misc stuff laying all over the place.

Currently all the frags in the frag tank are just that they are small. I hope that one day I will have larger mid sized colonies and I can frag them instead of the bigger colonies in the display. It's also nice to have backups in the event that something happens in the display tank and you lose pieces.

OK, so it's not for the purpose of selling them.

It seems to me that maintaining 2 tanks is 2x costly and 2x the headache?

In our situation our frag tank is tied right into our system. I have a few snails and a six line wrasse in there, other than that, I don't do maintenance. The two sides that are visible are honestly pretty covered in coraline algae right now, I usually keep up with it, but honestly it takes second priority to the rest of the maintenance throughout the system.

Short answer: doesn't add much maintenance within our setup.

Correct, which is why I would never maintain two systems. My Frag tank is plumbed in with my display tank and sump. 3 tanks total- 1 system, no additional cost And much less of a headache for all the reasons I mentioned above. I don't think I'll ever run a system again without a frag tank attached to it.

I have a frag tank completely separate from the my DT reason is AEFW, red bugs, and the other unwanted hitchhikers. Plus it allows me to let the coral grow with near perfect conditions. I get 10x the growth in my frag tank than I do my display and they run at the same parameters.

I have a 60 gal frag tank tied into my system (though 'isolated' with a UV in the water feed line). Different people use them for different things, even for selling or trading. I use mine as a place to 'grow out' purchased/traded for frags and as a place for trimmings from my display. I suppose if I viewed a second tank as twice the 'headache', I'd not be in the hobby in the first place

At some point this spring I plan on finishing my stand for a 40 breeder. I'll have 2 extra tanks at that point. A 15gl octogon which I'll save for fish qt. I also have a 15gl bc, which has CURRENT leds in there a strip of white and a strip of blue. To keep this a coral or frag only tank do I need to anything other than water changes?
Edit: What maintenance is there to a frag tank, other that water changes?
