Why do you like SPS?

Wow Denadai, please tell me how you got them to grow like that. Can you give me your system details? lighting, equipment, feeding etc...?

OP here..

I think I'm starting to understand. My interest is there for SPS. I'll go talk to my coral guy.

Same reason I like chess... the challenge of simplicity. Chess moves are easy to master... the game is not.

While I only have LPS corals thus far in my young reef, but I love the way many SPS corals look. I especially love the various montiporas and stylophoras. I doubt any will have color comparable to my symphyllia, its hard to beat 4 fluorescent pigments and 5-6 contrasting colors on a single coral, but the symphyllia also will not have the shape that a monti spongodes does!

Two main reasons:
First being colorblind makes growth forms a lot more interesting than colors.
Second I think the process of calcification by animals is amazing (even in humans) but love the way you can really observe this in sps

You may get a lot of motion out of LPS corals when kicked back in your chair across the room, but the motion inside of a good SPS tank absolutely trumps it when you get up close.

I have a few LPS corals waving around in my tank but they stand alone because they will sting and kill anything near them so they are a little boring to watch. Bunches of acro colonies on the other hand have so much life to them, especially with crabs in them.

I feel like SPS reefs are the only way to have both dimension and color from a coral. While there are soft and LPS corals that are colorful, there are very few, if any, that grow anything other than encrusting forms. The endless color/growth options paired with the constant challenge of an SPS tank are the reasons these animals are so appealing to an experienced hobbyist.

I second that. Sometimes day-to-day, you can visually notice growth. You wake up one morning and go, "Hey! That wasn't encrusting over the epoxy yesterday!" And I think that it's awesome that my coral can thrive off of the snow-melting product (calcium) that I dose.

Because it's like underwater bonzai

For me me this why I do SPS. This and all the different color combinations that you get. It's underwater living art that you can sculpt however you choose. When you get to the point where you have full blown colonies shaped just how you pictured, with a few select fish to complement the scene. It's one of the most stunning things that you will ever see (at least to me). I never get tired of looking at well maintained SPS aquariums. With so many different growth patterns of SPS, the possibilities are endless. You're only limited to your imagination.

For me it's the colors not just of one coral, because LPS can have way more different colors in one, but the colors of all the diffent spiecies combined, in well grown growth patterns.

A lot of it is choosing the right species. Buying fast growing corals (that have been properly IDed) like Seriatopora hystrix vs Acropora valida will give you a nice tank in less time.

Don't forget the right flow is the single most important factor in keeping stonies (especially dense brancing varieties). Most can live without light if you pour rotifers into the tank several times a day.

I like the look of a fully grown out SPS tank, the fuzzy sticks get me every time, not sure what it is with SPS but Rey are by far the coolest coral out there. So much variations between color and looked its amazing.

highly disagree with the second half of this post. it always comes down to water quality; flow is great, light is very important, but water quality ie alk, calc, phos, nitrates (in that order for me) are most important for stonies...

somewhat disagree with first half of post but that is me splitting hairs

Agree with your disagree. Water quality trumps all with SPS.

IMO...
1. Water quality
2. Flow
3. Lights.

Oh ya, water quality without question. I assumed that goes without question.

  1. Quality
  2. flow
  3. light
  4. feeding
