Second I think the process of calcification by animals is amazing (even in humans) but love the way you can really observe this in sps

I think I'm starting to understand. My interest is there for SPS. I'll go talk to my coral guy.
A lot of it is choosing the right species. Buying fast growing corals (that have been properly IDed) like Seriatopora hystrix vs Acropora valida will give you a nice tank in less time.
Don't forget the right flow is the single most important factor in keeping stonies (especially dense brancing varieties). Most can live without light if you pour rotifers into the tank several times a day.
highly disagree with the second half of this post. it always comes down to water quality; flow is great, light is very important, but water quality ie alk, calc, phos, nitrates (in that order for me) are most important for stonies...

somewhat disagree with first half of post but that is me splitting hairs
