Why do you use a skimmer?

well danny i like my $1000 pile of crap i i dont like the stink and the humidity that algea scrubbers put off, a local guy has an algea scrubber and makes his house smell like s--t. And also i would like to add my skimmer might remove both good and bad but i do know what i am putting in it and know it is good, and for the record tanks with algea scrubbers are yellow and have slow sps growth, excretions from algea is a known irritant to sps corals and hinders calcification,

in conclusion..skimmers work great in my FOT but in my reef i will allways run a scrubber that grows me copepods, amphipods, mini-stars, etc. not downing one or the other..only reason i posted was to give out information but if people are goign to sit there and talk down on the information im trying to give im not going to worrie about it. just trying to prove a point.

Q: danny, are you too poor to own a skimmer and mad at the owners that have one??
A:(shakes 8 ball) All signs point to yes

Q:whens the last time you ate roman noodles?
A:dinner

Q:Danny, lets see some photos of your thriving tank with a scrubber
A:you cant.... cuz i dont have one...

well your barking up the wrong tree here because 95% of the hundreds of thousands of people here use skimmers and swear by them

scrubbers have been bettered since the last time you checked into them problably cus my tank is neither yellow or grows my sps slow..this is the reaons why u clean the screen every 7 days. and the reason your local guys scrubber stinks is because he did not build it properly. not enough flow, doesnt clean the screen.

and again this makes many of you answere the way i expected everyone to, because i dont run 1000 dollar equipment and doing just fine its pinches your nerves LOL

LOL guys! :lmao:

I was hella drunk when I made this thread (the room was spinning). I was thinking 'out of the box' (literally) and out loud, pondering what the skimmer is actually removing.

You were drunk in the middle of the afternoon?

I'm still trying to wrap my head around how copy/paste from a website pushing algae scrubbers, and an anecdotal example of a sigle member's tank that's less than a year old is supposed to be an example about how scrubbers are proven technology.

Algae scrubbers might work, but my $200 skimmer has been cleaning 550gal of water (0 ammonia, nitrites, nitrates) for longer than that with a single water change. I'm not sure a fancy refugium like an algae scrubber would need $1000 skimmers to compete :)

well its just information, i didnt post anything downing skimmers..anything i posted was comparing the two. I am glad the skimmer works for you. skimmer works for me just fine on my tank as well.

Keep in mind that skimmers and algae turf scrubbers are not exclusive -- You can have both and enjoy the benefits of both.

xdannyxrocksx, With all due respect, successfully running a tank for 8 months without a skimmer is a step in the right direction and you are to be commended. However, I would in no way quantify that as the epitome of success nor as the final say on skimmers versus scrubbers. In my opinion, tanks <1 are still new and are by no stretch "out of the woods".

With that being said, I won't argue the benefits of scrubbers as they do have their applications. However, they are not practical for every setup. Furthermore, they can be a great adjunct to a skimmer but are also not always a suitable replacement.

As far as removing desirable nutrients, I've kept SPS for many years, aside from PWC's and maintaining Ca, Alk, Mg, I do not dose a single thing nor use a refugium. However, I receive exponential growth in spite of running 2 skimmers on this system. In other words, I think you are grossly overestimating the nutritional requirements of corals and/or the ability of skimmers to remove zooplankton.

Just to put my money where my mouth is, A Gratuitous FTS :D

With a good skimmer and a fuge full of macro algae you reap the benefits of both a skimmer and an algae scrubber.
I have seen tanks utilizing just scrubbers and other tanks with just skimmers, and neither compare to a skimmer plus a fuge.
If I had to choose between a scrubber or a skimmer I would choose the skimmer hands down.

and i agree with both of you guys, its about time people with sense reply. I agree its not a win for me yet. Like my first couple of posts stated, this is a new tank its only an experiment. It has been doing fine i have been seeing good results. All i posted was information and results by no means did i down skimmers, did i say they were crap. If u have a good balance skimmers are very succesful.

@serpentman: amazing tank, may i ask what is your filtration set up?

@uncle_salty: I agree with you, in other words when it comes down to it its personal opinion, not one is better than the other, one does what the other doesnt.

i was under the impression that there was some copying and pasting goin on... this greatly depletes your info's credibility... clearly one was not speaking on there own long term experience... and used no quotes to show he was doin so... they call this purjury... a shame really

where as the rest of us are speaking from at least a few years of proven results and personal knowledge and experience...

and i will agree yet again, skimmers are by far the best and proven method... and refugiums are incredibly beneficial as well...

and i also believe that no one was drunk when the made this thread, personally i think it is jus a scape goat for the stands those with experience are taking against the thread...

nothing i am sure will ever replace my skimmers as far as keeping my water quality in check... its jus the way it is, imo
