why might my sps be closed during the day and open at night??? any thoughts???

compiled test results for all i could check

compiled test results for all i could check

temp is usually 79 to 81 pending on the weather out, usually right at 80

salinity 1.026, though i do need a refractometer

ph 8.4, but i did add buffer before posting this thread, but no longer will unless it gets below 8.0

nitrates 0 to maybe a few ppm at the most, i need a more accurate low range test, and will be addig my dsb to my sump area later today... about as deep as i can make it...

phosphates 0 to maybe a tiny bit, but well less than .25 if there even is any

kh 12

calcium 320... seems to have used 20 ppm in the last day or so

and my mag is low after learning the test and performing it twice, 1000 or so

............

i did dose one dose of the calcium additive but not the alkalinity one

and i did a full dose of the magnesium additive (kent) as directed for raising the mag level to the proper level... 1 ml per gallon, per day until it gets to the proper level

be gentle guys, remember i am learning here... lol

but please, with these finding, advise me constructively...

Stop buffering your ph. ph climbs during day with lights on. If I was a betting man I would guess if you test your ph tonight before your lights turn off you will be in the 8.6 range....

My last piece of advice I am going to give in this is stop all dosing. Do some 15 to 20 percent water changes over the next week or so. do not dose anything and then check all your levels daily for three or four days and write it all down. This will show you what your tank consumes daily and then you can decide if weekly water changes will suffice or if you need to add a supplement.

i am mixing a fresh batch of 30 gallons of saltwater now, i am gonna check the calcium, mag and kh jus for kicks... and thank you again bmiller...

of course i am still open for more input guys, thank you :)

let me correct myself, i had all my paramters triple check by someone else who has done these test far more than i have... and he found my mag to be at the high of about 1350 to 1370... so looks like i jus need to let my kh drop a bit, and get my calcium up a bit ...

jus thought i would mention it

this might sound really stupid , but do All SPS corals have PE during the light hours? i have a tricolor that never is open during the day, but at night explodes ... has been growing and has beautiful color... here's an old picture the coral i speak of is in the top center. by the way it was bought as a frag 4 years ago.

Same question here. I have amazing PE on some during the day and none on other...HOWEVER, all color is great and growth is outstanding.

A good article about Ca and Alk problems.

If you turn your flow down during the day do the polyps extend? 1500 gph is a lot.

ya know, i understand what you mean by saying its alot... buts its one of those things where someone says i have too much and the next person says i should have nothing less than a mp40 in my 40 breeder (which is jus silly imo)

and maybe they extend a little bit... but its hard to say at this point
