I have this bookshelf tank idea in the back of my mind for quite some time now. It would be very long, 96"', but only 6" high and between 6" to 12" wide. Wich fish wouldn't mind being in such a shallow tide pool?

Pipefish,
Most goby,

Rainfords goby or some other small goby probably. My rainfords are in about 9-11" of water and they are fine. Problem is, rainfords are territorial, so maybe just one. Or a different type. Gobys in general are good because they stay low to the substrate and don't swim up into the water column that much.

Shrimps and crabs for sure, I love them.
I might not be able to provide a deep enough sand bed to host a shrimp/goby pair.
Good suggestion on the eel but they leave me indifferent
A display planted regium would look great for sure :)

The smallest blennies would be great as well. Good call on the rainfords goby.

So far we have:

-Pipefish (to finicky eater to my taste I think)
-Most gobies
-small eel
-the smallest blennies (bicolor, tail spot)

-shrimps, crabs, other invertebrates
-macro algea
-soft corals

you could keep any of the smaller scorpionfish/waspfish in it. they are substrate dwellers for the most part, and are definitely cool fish, and won't really break your pocketbook.

a group of leaf scorps (they come in different colors), pretty much any waspfish...you can even mix them.

if you went brackish, you could do an awesome indian mudskipper tank. they stay small (~4") and can be kept in groups. they do need a "beach" tho.

Barnacle blenny?

we have a little colony of barnacle blennies, and IME, they are not "lateral" fish and need a bit of height, as once they find a good hole ("home"), they seldom move. however, they pop up and back in during feeding time (think "whack-a-mole"), so they need at least 6" - 8" of space above the top of their hole.

I'm not into scorpionfish/waspfish but thanks for the suggestion. Few years ago I looked at mudskippers but since they live in mud it's a bit hard to design a pretty display.

I must admit my favorite fish are the dragonets. Maybe one day when ORA starts selling their tank breed mandarin, or if I can hookup an oversized refugium.

I would not take the risk with damsels. Basslets are interesting too.

I believe such a shallow tank must be covered, yes.

I asked Miracles Aquarium for a quick quote and they would build such a tank for 435$. This is about what I was expecting from a top class manufacturer. The shipping would come down to 350$ however wich is a deal breaker to me, Unless I find an opportunity to pick it up myself. Still big bucks for a 15G tank! :) Glasscage don't deliver to Canada I believe.

If I find the nerves I could also build it myself. I'll shop for glass price next week-end.

Catalina's need cold water to survive long term. Cardinals could be cool if you kept the scape really open.

How about a really nice dwarf angel?
