Will a clams membrane grow back?

I just picked up a deresa and maxima clam today. They looked great at the shop, but when I got it back to my tank and it opened up, I noticed a third of the membrane was gashed open...
Is this normal and will the clam regrow the membrane?...

It doesn't appear as if the membrane was cut or in some kind of accident..."I can't explain it."

i think you are seeing the incurrent siphon. very normal, and very necessary.

I always start my research at my lfs and/or RC, because without the proper terminology "there can be no research, don't you agree?" Also, if you took the time to read my post, you'll notice that the clam was fine until I brought it home so I could no longer ask the shop as it was closed.

I read up on siphons in wet web media and found that clams in general
gape or develop siphons when they're stressed or are bing acclimated so far. But thanks for your helpful comment...

I'd give that an F

A clam lives by filtering water through it's gills using one siphon to draw water in and the othe to expel it.

Clams have siphons PERIOD.

They do gape open far more widely when they are weak.

I'd try a new lfs if that's their idea of knowledge!!

The siphon was gaping as they refer to it, more than normal as it was not like that when I picked it out. Probably due to stress or as you guessed weakness. The local shop is fine and I never had a chance to talk to them about this situation, so bad guess on your part and you also get an "F" for that. Btw, thanks for the knowledge...

im assuming its the clam on the left. if it is, thats a crocea, and they hold their incurrent siphons much wider than maximas (on ur right) do. you might want to know the type of clam you have before researching, your LFS gets an F. also, make sure you read my lighting requirements thread!

i think he is refering to you being sold a crocea and told it is a derasa, they have much different requirements.

If your water and lighting requirements are good that Crocea will recover. Very pretty Maxima .

I think it is important to give good information to folks on the board without making people feel bad. Even if someone has gone out and bought something without knowing a darn thing and is completely mis-informed about their new critter they are more likely to listen and learn when treated respectfully. Sometimes what we type and what we meant gets misconstrued...so if you were not trying to make the person feel bad it can come across that way if we are not a bit more thoughtful about our delivery. Okay, enough...enough, I know, no one probably cares but it felt good to ge up on the box for a minute and encourage all of us to treat each other well. Good luck with your clams and if you are in the market there are some excellent clam books out there...One of my all time favorites is by Daniel Knopp-Giant Clams.

Oh no! My mistake...I don't know how I did that, I meant a crocea not a deresa, I take full responsibility for that one...

Also slojmn, you're right about the delivery and that is very thoughtful on your part, but also found that some people just can't help themselves...

Anyways, thanks for correcting me and all the good information guys...
