Will a large staghorns under sides section regrow?

So I have a really large acropora (staghorn 11"). I actually had him growing into my Liverock so it has a very thick layer growing over the LR. The top was free to grow up. After moving him I noticed that it's almost lightening up at the base (where light don't reach the polyps). The branchs that where growing out had white growth tips but not the base.

Today, I moved the acropora in a place of higher flow & light. How long do I wait before cutting him up (assuming I have too)? I really want to avoid doing this but if I see the underside base (die off), will the top survive?

If it's not bleaching and spreading leave it? - this is what I was going by but tell me if I should do something else. It's almost impossible to give the entire colonie a good amount of light after it's that large and overshadowing and growing into LR. For instance, my tabling acropora is about 7'' and its base get zero light penetration. So the underside is just dead and lighter in color. Sometimes It appears to be white.:uhoh3:

yes it will. I've had the entire base die off where it didn't get enough flow or light. Eventually I cut the top and glued it to the bottom to fix it.

The base is not getting enough light I have to cut it up into maybe 5 pieces? I don't think this staghorn is mature enough where I need to go to those measures. I have seen this extremely large tanks with crazy growth not even cut up corals until it's to save the entire colonie from death. During the early stages of the base dies off is there any hope for them to regenerate?

I took this picture today after moving it; hopefully it does better in this location. Notice the heavy branch growing towards the bottom of the colonie. The under side to this part seems to be brown and no polyps showing. The sides which get adequate lighting seem to be doing fine. This is a good example of why aquascaping is so important. Had it not been growing into the LR and into open space; may have been more spread out and less chances of this happening.

wow thats a nice piece. hope it comes back for you

thanks, My Instincts tell me to just leave the coloney alone and see how it reacts to the better flow lighting area. Based on the picture you can't really tell if there is die off. I can tell you this - the entire colonie is not created equally. Some polyps are full some are not, some seem to have more polyp extension then others. Worst case - I will have to frag the two larger colonies on the top. I don't want to frag until it's absolutely required to save the entire colonie.

I know this is random, but have you been to aquatic dreams (recently) and seen there awesome 600 gallon sps tank?:spin2: I wish I could speak to the owner regarding his incredible staghorns...Video on youtube is from 4 years ago and I was wondering if he still has them large stags.

thanks..I would love to see some update pictures. Can you find out exactly what the name of that yellow staghorn is? I actually posted a thread few days ago

Let's find out if the yellow stag is really a green slimer:thumbsup:

lol how funny i just watched that video...yes thats his green slimmer you are correct...lol since that video he has moved locations.ill go tomorrow and take some pics. i bet its killin ya to see it...

that 600 is lit by 6 400w halides...it also has 12 vho actinics...he was a TOTM a while back.u can see all his colonies...his username is kevinpo...

Too bad your on the other side of the country..lol.. I am curious to see how much larger his colonies have gotten since this video. I think it's impressive that he grew his staghorns to that size. Can you please ask him few question I have on this thread regarding my current staghorn problem?

Just ask if I made the correct move by moving the staghorn because the bottom branch's where growing along the LR and had no room to breath. Do you think the colony will recover in this new location or are the underside sections going to effect the entire colonie? Should I just wait and see if it responds? Should I frag only when healthy sections start to deplete? If you could get Kevins take that would be awesome.

This is what we are talking about guys..Can you say "HOLY STAGHORN"

yes i will write your questions down and go and talk to him for you.his tank is crazy.wait till you see his clam its 2' 6" across.:spin1:

It's amazing to look back at older TOTM and see just how far our hobby has come in such a short time. Kevin really knows how to grow corals fast (based on his frag growth)

If you add a white shallow sand bed the reflected light will solve your problems ashish, i'm assuming you have a BB tank considering the underside is bleaching from no light. Beautiful colony btw mate :)
