I have had montis within 4 inches of the surface under my 10K XM's 250 watters. The lights are about 5 to 6 inches off the water. Now IME, they take awhile to adjust to the lights.
I picked up a green w/ purple rim cap that was in bad condition. Some spots were fine and others were bleaching. I placed it in the only spot I had and alot of the coral browned out which was good for the bleached spots but not for the colored ones. After about 2 months, the whole thing colored up amazingly, and is now a radiant green with a large purple rim.
If you want it high, you need to really acclimate it over a 3 to 4 week period or be prepared for whatever happens.
