a lot of types fish food are frozen, so not sure how you would store it if not in the freezer. I always put mine in a ziplock freezer bag to try and prevent freeze burn
I'm sure this has been asked, but does anyone know if repeatedly thawing and freezing frozen foods is bad? A single cube of frozen food lasts my 29g with 3 fish about a week, with me thawing, feeding some, and refreezing the remainder daily.
I was thinking how dry pelleted foods would do. What would be a rule of thumb for self life outside a freezer? I guess some of them have expiration dates.
zachfishman - What you can do instead is to thaw the cube and re-freeze half right away. You can keep it in the fridge for three or four days. If it goes bad, the smell will let you know before you put it in the tank.
Repeated thawing and freezing will break down the cell walls by increasing the level of ice crystal formation. Breaking down the cell walls will tend to turn the food into more of a dissolved form, with more nutrients going directly into the water column. I avoided thawing frozen food as much as possible.
I think the main thing is to avoid excessive exposure to air. There are a lot of things in marine fish food like fatty acids that are susceptible to oxidation and once oxidized can be difficult if not impossible for the fish to metabolize. This can contribute to liver problems and other complications. These problems are especially common in carnivores like lionfish and groupers.
