I have a 75 gallon tank that I am converting to a reef. What do you think of the light fixture I found.

The information is listed below.

Custom Sea Life Hood

High Quality!!!!

Compact Fluorescent and Metal Halide

Measures 48 inches by 13.5 inches

This is a great hood for your aquarium. This is used, but is still in good condition. Comes with 2 power compact fluorescent bulbs, and you will need 2-175 watt metal halide bulbs (not included). This has been tested, and is in good working condition. Everything pictured is included. Please see my other auctions, I have a second fixture (the same as this one) listed.

Go for at least 250w MH for the 75g tank. IMO, 175w MH won't cut it for a 75g, it would be good for a 55g though. What kind of corals do you plan to have?

You may not notice alot of growth due to lack of PAR. If that light is the only fixture within your budget, then I'd look into buying 175w Iwasaki 14k bulbs. Those bulbs give out the most PAR from the 175w versions.

I am just looking for a light. I am looking to do this in the next 6 months so I can save up the money. I am looking to have a nice mix of different corals.

Agree that 250w would be the preferred one on a 75g because of the depth. You would have to put all sps very high and most lps. With 250w you could keep sps from half to all the way up and LPS anywhere even on the bottom. Softies would need just a bit of shade, although I have softies and even sponge on the bottom not in the shade.

I don't think the difference in cost would be more than $25 or $30 between 175w and 250w. Get the most you can so you are not limited to what you can keep.

As for the PC supplements, should work good for waking up and putting the tank to bed. Won't do much for actinic with 250w bulbs though. I have 2x55w pc's with 2x250w. If you go with a bulb of 13k-20k you wouldn't need actinics anyway.
