Reef Central is proud to be the Reception Sponsor of MACNA 2010 in Orlando. With the
event being just 6 weeks away we thought we would give a Reef Central member a
chance to win 2 Full Conference Tickets!

With education being an important aspect of both Reef Central and MACNA we thought we
would make the contest about the incredible Speaker Line up being featured this year. So
to enter to win respond to this thread with:

  1. Name of the Speaker you are most excited about seeing @ MACNA 2010
  2. Why
Here is a link to the speaker line-up on the MACNA Website

The winner will be selected by Reef Central's very own Ryan Baker on Monday August 2nd.

While I would like to attend many of the presentations, perhaps the one I am most excited about is Bruce Carlson's talk on the coral bleaching in Fiji. I have been keeping marine aquariums for over 35 years, I am now finishing my degree in biology and plan to pursue a PhD in conservation biology specializing in aquatic habitats. Reef restoration is one of the areas I will be studying. I also firmly believe that this and similar hobbies are of extreme value in preventing extinction and providing needed stock for future restoration projects and if restoration is not possible, species will still be around in captivity rather then lost forever.
H. Wayne Osborne.

1. Richard Ross
2. Interested in what rare cephs are available for the advanced aquatics home aquarium.

1. I am most excited to hear Bob Fenner speak about "Stocking Small Marine Systems"
2. This coming fall I am going off to Auburn University to study Marine Biology. In many ways Bob Fenner is one of the main guys that inspired me to pursue the field of Marine Biology. Since I was about 10 years old, I'd always go to WetWebMedia.com to get the scoop on how to care for the animal I wanted so badly from my LFS. Bob Fenner was pretty much my go-to guy. The information he always gave was safe and consistent. I feel Bob Fenner has a heart for marine aquaria and gives information that would allow the hobbyist to give the best possible long-term care to the creature at hand. Frequently, many LFS employees and hobbyists that give advice that doesn't accommodate to the entire lifespan of the animals. Bob Fenner, on the other hand, always looks out for the animals first and never gives faulty advice. It would be such an inspiration for me to see him speak in person as a hobbyist as well as a budding marine biologist.

2. With all the talk of LED's, the die hard believers and the people that swear it will never work long term I've never actually seen a LED tank in person. I'd like to hear about this from a scientific factual standpoint not just hearsay and speculation. With an unusual tank, corner tank, proper lighting is difficult and LED seems modular enough that it would help people with things outside the normal "box" aquariums.

Great idea to use this as the giveaway by the way. Good luck.

Matt Pedersen

I feel that Matt Pedersen would be my most anticipated speaker. Thanks to his superb research and information, the harlequin filefish, a beautiful, methodical fish, has a chance of being reborn as a captive raised reef inhabitant. After reviewing his work, and the vast information available on the net, I was able to successfully convert a WC specimen into a fully functional, voracious eating tank inhabitant. When I moved I found a suitable reef keeper who was able to care for such a wonderful fish. I would love to see what new progress and information Matt has available. Maybe, one day, I will set up a new tank just for a OSFF.

2. He has made huge strides in the awairness of protecting our corals through the development of many captive grown strains. Hes a pioneer in getting us many of the beautifull corals that were never thought to be keeped in a captive setting.

2. Interested in Marine Ornamental Breeding

Of course it would also help if you indicate what topics they might be speaking on since "breeding urchin" is not as sexy as "breeding mandarin" ;-D (sorry Martin, nothing against your work) :P

1. I am excited at the opportunity to see/hear many of the people that wrote the books, articles, threads, etc that I have shaped the ornamental reef keeping hobbyist's world (especially mine)! But Thomas Frakes' speech/talk really catches my eye.

2. Conventional Wisdom, Myths and Misconceptions. That practically speaks for itself. Its the conventional wisdom that shapes the hobbyist view of keeping the home aquarium and thus the myths and misconceptions seem to cause the greatest heart ache. I see these mistakes all day long at work, especially with fresh water, so strangely it is refreshing to listen to some one else talk about it other than me.

1. Russell Whitney Ca, Alk, & Mag - Basics

2. As Macchicks husband I have recently taken a interest into her hobby. I want my own tank now. I know that she has read about the balance between Ca, Alk, & Mag. But she really has not ventured into the testing and dosing. I know she does regular water changes to keep levels in normal range, but as she is teaching me other basics I would like to be able to help her understand the ones she does not.

2. Because lighting is very important in this hobby and changes in style/types are always confusing to compare. (atleast for me)

1: Richard Ross

2: Very interested in cephalopods and excited to hear some of the opportunities now available as far as cephalopods being kept in captivity.

I'm most interested in seeing Dr. Judy St. Leger and her Rising Tide speech. I'm interested in the speech but to be honest, most interested in meeting her. I am a pre-veterinary medicine student at University of Florida and this could open up opportunities when I get to talk with her. She may have advice and direction for me about possible opportunities at Seaworld or other places as a veterinarian. I am leaning towards being a marine animal veterinarian and this would be an amazing experience and opportunity for me to go. Also, as a student, I can't afford these tickets. I would love to go.

1. All of them! Too bad we are unable to see them all speaking as some presentations take place at the same time.
2. Knowledge from all areas of expertise will make us successful reefers!

The speaker my family is most excited to hear and see is Charles Delbeek. What a great day it will be to sit with my wife and 8 year old son and listen to Charles Delbeek. Hearing his thoughts on where reefkeeping has been in the last 25 years and where it is going would be very exciting. Thinking about my son possibly being involved in the hobby in 25 years from now and him looking back on my equipment and techniques saying "œwow, we have come a long ways since my dad was keeping his tank" makes me laugh and want to keep him involved with our home tank. It's funny I've never really realized how much I would like my son to pick up on this hobby or even pursue a career in this industry till writing this but either way Charles Delbeek and the whole MACNA event will definitely be a great way to learn new things and pass along knowledge of husbandry and conservation to the next generation.
