Would this radion be strong enough to grow SPS?

Would be more than enough. Most likely you won't even have it at the highest intensity. I run my G3 Pro at 55% and it works great.

Now I'm on the fence about which tank I'm going to go with. It's either going to be the red sea reefer nano which is 18x18x18, or the red sea reefer 170 which is 24x20x20. Would this radion still be good?

Forgive my ignorance on LED I took a break from the hobby when T5 and metal halide were the go to and LED were very new.

Thanks.

I use a single Hydra 26HD and grow SPS all over in my Reefer 170.

I personally would do the Reefer 170. I was going to get the Nano and I'm so beyond happy I didn't, especially after seeing both in person.

So in other words, get the Reefer 170 and XR15 and you will be able to grow SPS. If, however, you keep your tank until your SPS grow into massive colonies, you will definitely need two XR15's to help balance out the lighting coverage.

I have 2 xr15 gen3 and 1xr15 gen4 over a 36x24x24 running the spsAb+ program. 3 months in and I am getting good growth from acros in the top half and good growth from Montis in the bottom half.

All of us REEFER Nano owners want to know just exactly what you mean by that crack? :strooper:

Just a small update, I ordered the red sea reefer 170 this morning from marine depot. Really excited. Got the one with the white stand :)

I've decided I'm going to just get the xr30 since I'll probably need it in the future.

If you go with 2 XR15s it will cost a little more than the 1 XR30, but you will have more flexability in puck placement. Might be worth the extra money. Something to think about anyway. Plus if one were to go out you wouldn't be completely in the dark while the other was being repaired.

You are going to have a lot of shading as they grow up. The undersides will get pale and the corals can start to die from the base up. This is not just the xr15 that will do this, but any point source LED like the Radion or Kessil. The units that go wider like Photons don't have this type of issue, but do have others like blending issues with SPS. Some of the harder core SPS'ers will use a pair of xr30s on that kind of area.

In the end, as your frags start to turn into colonies, you will likely just put in a handful of T5 tubes to fill in the spectrum gaps and also shading issues. ...or just go with a single Pendant, which a lot of people do on 24x24 tanks.

Do you think I should do a halide right from the get go? I really no very little about led.

I am one of the folks that think that at-best you will get 75% of the results with any LED than you could get with a MH, so take that for what it is worth... You might not even notice and if you do notice, then you might not even care. If you think that you will notice and it will grind on you over time, then I would just start with the end game. Some of the reflectors from Hamilton are awesome at covering 24x24 without any other bulbs... Cozumel Sun, M80 and Radium 20K would be a best-of-breed SPS light.

Halides are awesome, just have blankets handy for your guests because you are going to have to crank the air conditioner. Evaporative cooling works too. You can hook a fan up in the cabinet. You will definitely need another ATO as you will probably evaporate a gallon a day.

I saw the bulb and reflector on premium aquatics web sight, but i can't find an m80 ballast. Any idea where I can find one online?
