Would this work for an overflow?

Is it okay to just have an elbow aimed up with a strainer on top of it? This way the only water going to the sump is directly from the top of the tank. I made a horizontal overflow but apparently it had a crack in it and water flows through the sides. So i was thinking i could just tear that POS out and flip the elbow so it is pointed up. Tell me would this work well?

Good I dont really want that ugly overflow in my tank anyways, even though it took me 5 hours to build with a sh*tty jigsaw. haha

running an airline tube down the elbow (with a diffuser or something similar on the end) will help with the gurgle. My old 55gal. had this type of setup (90 deg. elbow with strainer). It worked fine for the amount it needed to drain, and with the airline hose in I didn't notice as much noise (although it is still loud).

i would think you would need to keep the water level at a constant level though unless of course you are going to drill holes in the elbow but level would still be a concern
