This is my 1st post but I'd like to touch base on some issues I'm having. I've been doing this for about 2 years now, in the last year I've been running my new 90g mixed reef set up. I've recently converted my old Hamilton 2x175mh and 2x110 vhos for my diy 72 x 3w cree set up. I noticed almost instant color up on all my somewhat newly aqquired sps frags in just a few days. I've always kept up with water changes and never had a problem with any swings or spikes in water specs.
I knew my old light set up was a little lacking but I didn't have really any high light demanding SPS species, and the ones I did have, I ran them up high to get plenty of light. As I look at comparison photos of everyones SPS, I believe that mine are getting their butts flat out stomped. Phosphate never showed any reading on the API test. So I took it in to my LFS and to my surprise,my phosphate was through the roof!:headwally: I even double checked with a different kit of the same brand I had at the house!
I ended up finding my problem was my RO DI membrane was just shot, which when I bought it from the guy he said he had just changed it. I took his word for it because the 3 filters in the acrylic housings looked new. So hopefully I stopped the introduction of the dreaded po4.
Long story short I decided to get a Phosban reactor for some GFO. This is day 2 and it looks like someone pulled all my poo poo brown sps and switched them out. I've even started to notice white growth tips on numerous acros. 2 days???? Is this even possible?? If anyone has had any other problems like this, how long did it take yours to recover??

Congrats, big boy pants are in order, lol.

Anyway, depending on the coral, it may take anywhere from a few days to a few months for them to regain their former glory.

You didn't happen to take before and after pics did you? Those are always fun :D

Pics? lol - would love to see the comparison because I am on the fence to make the leap and go LED.

make sure the growth tips arent actually bleaching. Change in lights (especially that bright) + addition of GFO(which will clarify water by removing lots of PO4) can cause some bleaching. Hopefully not but just be aware

You can go to LED (the good ones) without fear. I run on LEDs for 2 and a half years now. It's just great!

A little colors ? ok look...

WOW...

ok two years with no problems and good growth is enough for me. Very nice pics, but hows about a full tank shot?? I'm thinking i'll go the route of 3 par38 bulbs over my 25 flat back hex with the par30 bulb kit from boost led, don't much care for the home depot el cheapo maximo clamp on lights, and bulbs from... hmm... so many choices nowadays... Ehhh I have time to shop around for par30/38 bulbs. Hopefully I dont bleach anything, and thanks for the pics. Definitely feel like I'm going in the right direction after seein your sps shots!!!

and don't forget, we NEED a full tank shot :D

Check for bleaching or burnt tips.

What are your Alk and Ca levels?

Alk is at 9 and ca at 440. Really only thing I have bleaching (which i figured it would) is my 2 montis. I've ran some mesh screen across the top to try and filter some light out without effecting my other corals which seem to be soaking it up.

Thanks for everybody's replies, its nice to get some second opinions.

I will get some pictures tomorrow when the lights kick on so i can start some comparison shots.

One thing about the LEDS i did was that i skimped on dimmable drivers. I bought 72 leds so i needed to cut some corners as the price tag was a little hefty. But those dang Xp-Gs are just so bright, it will give the tank a 10000-12000k look. I believe I'm gonna buy 3 dimmable drivers for whites only and save the other 3 drivers for a later build on a Cube or what not.

That is one fantastic reef, I always like to see full shots to just get the inspirational "think tank" going on, no pun intended. Makes my tank look like i need to put names and price tags on the glass...lol Hopefully Ill get there one day.

thanks for the reply, I'm definitely keeping an eye out. It totally makes sense with the P04 issues i was having, I'd get tissue loss on random frags, they would semi recover, brown out but still branch very slowly. Then for the past couple of months Im looking at all the progression shots of others successful tanks and BOOM! It freakin dawns on me, something isn't what it says it is. It's just funny how stubborn I was with it because I thought SPS was just that way, but it's looking like its turning out to be completely opposite. Just got to watch my p's and q's.

Tank params

Sal: 1.024
Ph: 8.2
alk: 9
calc: 440
Phos: Showing in between 0 and .5 with the API kit (need to get a more accurate kit)
Nitrate and Nitrite: 0

Right now blues on at 11:30 and off at 7:00
whites on at 12:30 off at 5:30
trying to slowly add 1 hour every couple of weeks to get everybody to take off their shades.
