Wrasse no cover

Who has no screen cover on wrasses. I saw a few at the lfs and they had no top covers. The manager said as long as it does not get spooked the fish will not jump. He has a rimless no cover 2 flame pair. He had them for 2 years

I have a sixline and a cleaner with no cover on the tank.
In the beginning the sixline did chase the cleaner a bit, and I found it in the overflow box a few times, but that was in my old tank. Now I have a much bigger rimless tank, with the waterline only 2" below the top of the tank, but I'm not worried...
I might rethink this situation in the future because I'm getting a Coris gaimard from a friend, and maybe some flasher wrasses. But so far so good...
I think the problem comes in smaller tanks, where the fish doesn't have anywhere to hide, and the only escape is to jump.

My wrasses jump when they get excited as I open the lid and start to feed them. I also hear them thump on the hood or LED lights at other times too when they get excited when I come home.

Wrasse no cover, tank no wrasse. I've seen wrasse jump out of 300 gallon systems. Will they all jump probably not but they all can.

-1...he doesn't know what he's talking about

-1...I have a 450g DT, with lots of hiding places, and little aggression...I hear them hitting the cover, EVERYDAY!

+1...basically most fish (especially wrasses) WILL jump, just a matter of when!

I've had triggerfish jump out of my tank... and I've lost wrasses regularly. I now place a cover over every system I employ, even if it's just for a few days or weeks as a quarantine.

The rule of thumb is any fish shaped like a torpedo (gobies, wrasses, etc.) you must have some type of screen cover or tops. All fish will jump these just seem like the ones that will make it out of the tank and turn into fish jerky.

I've had a melanarus for 2 years and he's never jumped. Never even comes to the top. Goes right to the sand when he's spooked or stressed.

I really think these fish jump because they love it. I lost a Flasher Wrasse who jumped so hard that she lifted the screen cover and wriggled out. I know we love the look of the rimless tanks, but you're asking for trouble.

Wrasse no cover, is like throwing your money out the window (or rather the top of tank as the case will be).

You CANNOT keep wrasses in an uncovered tank (unless of course, you don't care about the well-being of your livestock). It's a matter of when, not if.

I have egg crate over my tank hate the look but he hasnt jumped yet was working on long term screen top just havent gotten around to it

Eggcrate won't keep many fish in. They can get through much smaller spaces than you'd think.

IMO&E, people who keep wrasses in open tanks are operating on borrowed time. I had a pyle's wrasse that I got from a guy who left the hobby. He had kept the wrasse and five other fish in a 40-gallon tank in his garage with no cover for about a month after he broke his display down. The wrasse stayed happy in my tank for nearly a year with no obvious interest in jumping. Then one day, I found him on top of the net cover (which had been inadvertently left askew with about 1/2" opening on one side after I fed the tank).

I lost several flashers to open tops and over-optimism before I went to bird netting.

+1 to taking a very great risk in not covering the tank, especially with the prices some of these fish run at. Also +1 to eggcrate not being enough.

I lost 1 Pyle's to a completely uncovered tank, then 1 Pyle's, 1 anthias, 1 firefish, and 1 clown, to a hood that was not sealed up tightly enough. Not to mention, they had to get around the MH reflectors in the top of the hood and up at least 8" from the surface of the water to get out of the back of the hood. Last week, with eggcrate over my tank, I had dinner interrupted when my cat brought me a piece of fish jerky that was, that morning, a very fat and happy male Pyle's. I'm just happy he didn't eat the fish!

yellow corris in a custom rimless 29gal (footprint is 30x18) so there is a lot of room for him to jump. There is 45lbs of live rock with LOTS of places to hide, so maybe that's my advantage? I have never even seen him come out of the water yet or heard him hit the light. Tank mates are sharknose goby, mocha clown, banded hawk and big ole' pistol shrimp. Nothing seems to be bothering him, so i'm sticking with topless. I'll never put a lid on it anyway, too pretty without it and will ruin the reason i build a rimless tank!
