Lol someone knows my tank pretty well...Are you going to be at RAP?
thats true, i have spent a pretty penny on equipment.. but from what i have read a 50/50 mix of IO and Oceanic come out to near perfect reef requirements... then from what i have read Seachem reef comes in second best... i dont see people using TM salt very often on the boards...
Also I forgot to answer earlier. I try to learn as much about others tanks on RC as I can because you never know when something that someone else is doing can benefit you and your reef.
Unfortunately, I will not be at RAP. I will be out of the country!

Well I have always used IO and its been good to me.
But I have also been mixing IO with Oceanic since I got a deal on 200 gallon Oceanic salt.

I am not knocking the salt.. i just don't see many people using it....

Everyone I know uses it lol

Well, I just bought the 200gal bucket from Dr. Foster & Smith. It's only an extra $15 over Marine Depot including shipping, and driving to Anaheim on a weekday is NOT worth $15!

shipping for the salt is expensive at marinedepot. i believe its another 27.99 just for shipping.

Man, I wish MD had will call for a few hours on Saturdays. The 5 sucks on weekdays.

Even Jeff's Warehouse is open for a few hours on Sundays now.

I use the cheapest salt I can get. That's the advantage of paying a lot for your equipment upfront. This cheap salt gives the BK something to do while I'm not sitting and visiting with it. Gives it sense of purpose in life. :)

I use it but its not like I have a HUGE tank

I bought a 50gal box in may and I still have some left that will probaby last another month or so.

they will be open the will call doors the sat for reefapalooza...

Tropic Marin Pro = Best salt on the market for nutrient poor SPS set ups. Well worth the few extra bucks. Saves time too since there is no need to mix it for 24 hours. Dissolves in minutes and ready to go in the tank right on the spot.

FWIW, I wouldn't touch Oceanic w/ a 10 foot pole.

For the standard 'mixed' reef, Instant Ocean works great.

If you are on a budget, I suggest using Ocean Pure Pro Version. Great salt, priced very well.

Ali- is the OP pro too nutrient poor for lps/mixed reefs? I switched from IO and my sps love it but my lps don't...

Do you run a nutrient poor system?

4,600 mixed gallons worth of empty Oceanic buckets here at my shop that all came in full.

what about oceanpure pro?
i've been using this lately and i can't really tell the difference.
anyone heard of any bad batches or anything wrong w/their trace element levels?

Charles, there may be a chance that it is, but seems unlikely. Especially with all the good feedings you do. BTW, PM me your class schedule for this semester.

Bebo, that's the goal at least.

Regarding Oceanic, it may have just been a major bad batch deal that happened when they first came out which caused many people to get the exact same funky brown fuzzy hair type algae all over their rocks. They may have changed their formula and in all likely hood it's probably even a good salt mix now. I still wouldn't touch it though. At least not when TM Pro, OP Pro and IO are available.

Tropic Marin

Tropic Marin

Well, I am REALLY old and have been keeping Marine Fish and Inverts since 1970, (Holy Moly). I got hooked on Tropic Marin in the mid 90s by Reef Writer and TFH contributor John Tullok, who lived in my home town and was running a wonderful local aquarium store at the time. Back then he swore by it, though I admit that I have not talked to him in many years.

I occasionally experiment with other salt mixes, but TM has given me the most conistant positive results. I personally think you save money by using it in the long run.
