Yes, if you can drill the sides, the newer ghost-style overflows (such as the Synergy Reef Shadow) are much better than the older style with U-tubes that can lose a siphon and cause a huge mess.
Our comments were implying that you should check to see if the sides are tempered, because on many 40 gallon tanks only the bottoms are tempered. Sounds like you've done this, but it was not stated in your original post.
I have a cracked CPR cs 100 that has been sitting around since 2012. The crack isn't structura or importantl IMO as it sits above the operation water line. Yours free if youll pick it up in davis.
