WTB: refractometer

If you got a deal on one... someone else have a system they are getting rid of and happen to have one lying around as well? I wouldn't mind getting a refractometre.

you can find refractometers MUCH cheaper on Ebay than at places like Fosters & Smith. Just make sure that you use the word "aquarium" in your search so that you get the right type.

yea, I have searched e-bay. I think the cheapest I have seen one sell for plus shipping is $25. So I will wait until I get lucky and actually land one at that price..
Someone (I am not going to bust you out) was trying to sell me one with the fluid (distilled water) for $40! I would rather go to the other LFS for that price.

i have to tell you, a decent refractometer w/fluid for $40 is actually a pretty good deal (by the way, actual calibration fluid is NOT distilled water, it's a 35 ppt saline solution).

you should also realize that these things can run well over $75, depending upon the model. That said, I love mine and can't imagine how I ever got by without it.

I get by, by borrowing for now. I am getting by, and when I read the instructions as far as calibrating it states to use distilled I also have been using that method. Where would you get the fluid when one runs out?

 I couldn't agree more. I would be very leary about any refractometers being sold for $25 plus shipping.

FWIW $40 is a very good price for one.

Don't get me wrong here, I would try to save a buck wherever I can but the difference between $25 and $40 is negligible at best. At least with the $40 from Dr Foster's I know what I am getting and I am covered if something is wrong with the product. You're pretty throwing the dice when buying from CL. Not saying there aren't good deals to be had but....
