The Sedra is not the most reliable pump around. The impeller magnets swell and fail every few years, some times destroying the pump. Which mine recently did. At least I assume that is what happened as I can not get the impeller out any more. I had just recently cleaned it and thought it was good for another few months, asit was only a little swollen.
They also use a lot of electricity. That was my real reason for trying another pump.
the Jebao dct6000 skimmer pump maybe a reasonable alternative, although they are not particularly reliable. The Deepwater pumps seem to be better quality at a reasonable price, but I don't know of a needle wheel impeller for them. One could probably be printed on a 3d printer without to much trouble. I have been looking at other skimmers as well, but have limited space in my sump. most of the skimmers with internal pumps have limited bubble exposure time since the pump out put is so high in the skimmer. Just this morning I was looking at the Skimz oval 223 Skimmer and really like the way the pump is set up init giving maximum bubble contact time in a standard height skimmer. Another option is to make a taller skimmer which I have the room for.
