most likely by this weekend if all goes well once i get my pump back and/or replace it.... I need some help getting my new/used tank to drain correctly without overflowing... i need someone experenced with single center U tube overflow units sumps and refugiums.... i live in torrance right off the 405 or 110...

i just need to be shown HOW TO DO IT and the rest is cake... im more of a monkey see, monkey do kinna person so asking 4,631,854 questions on here about how to correctly get this thing-a-ma-bob to work is just not gonna work for me.

if the pump isnt strong enough why is it causing the tank to over flow...and why is the previous owner telling me that i have to make the priming hole smaller to have an effictive drain... this whole sump thing is kinna kon-fuse-ing : /

If your pump isnt strong enough, you might have to much water coming down the drain...


EXAMPLE:
Say your drain is bringing down 900gph into the sump.But your return pump is only pushing 600gph. Your sump will overflow eventually.

WAIT!!!! Nevermind!!! I see your talking about a built in overflow. My method is for a HOB overflow.Sory about that.

what about what the guy is telling me about the priming hole... umm...the one at the top of the U tube... the hole is located on a peice of pvc that is used as a cap... when the cap is removed the water drains directly down the hole into the sump...

With a U tube overflow, you can't drain more than the pump is putting in the tank. Algae build up will make it drain slower. Take the top off of your drain. The size of the hole is used to adjust the air to make it quiet but should have little effect on the drain rate. It seems your pump is larger than your drain will handel. What pump are you running? Most single overflows will drain 500 to 600 gph.

what i found with my HOB overflow was that the skimmer box was designed too low to have enough of a water level difference between the skimmer box and the drain box. i redrilled the skimmer box so that it would be an inch higher. now the thing is flowing like a champ. ill take a picture tomorrow when i get back home for you.

As bassnman stated, a properly set up overflow will only drain from the tank what the pump is pushing into it.

If your tank is overflowing, it's probably one of two things...either your pump is putting out more flow than the overflow is capable of handling or you have air in your U tube restricting flow over the top of your tank.

It sounds like the hole on top of your U tube was used to evacuate the air to prime the tube ( ie fill with water). If you can hook up an airline to it, you can use a powerhead with a venturi to suck out the air. Some people leave the powerhead connected to keep it primed and to remove the periodic buildup of bubbles. Hope that makes sense.

ok...this is where we are as to date... i have taken all the advice and trouble shot the issue at hand... i noticed that when i COMPLETELY COVER the hole on top of the U TUBE...it drains with no issues what so ever... but im sure that there must be some danger in doing so, si i used a needle point and just made the hole large enough to hear a slight wisper and i think / HOPE it will be ok.... does it sound like i just might be on a road to soggy carpet?

I don't think there's such a thing as a sump overflowing because of a weak pump if you filled the water level correctly in the first place.

The amount of water flowing down is equal to the amount of water being pumped up on the HOB overflows.

If your pump is too strong and the overflow can't handle it, that's the real problem.

i left the thing running over nite with NO HOLE for priming on top of the U TUBE and the thing drained fine all night...im just wondering what the danger might be IF there is no hole?
