Making food has been discussed in the past but has not been done since I have been a member. Sounds like a great topic to me, pros and cons of making your own food could be discussed as well.

That sounds good to me!!

Woot the Webmaster!

Program: D.I.Y. Food -

This is just a topic. Neither Pam, nor I have ever done this, so if somebody wants to take teh lead on this, have at it. It's just an Idea at this point. Go nuts!

i will try to be there--- i have made my own fish food( used examples from other reefers over the rc airwaves), no expert at all-- i just didn't have enough devoted time to continue to make it, plus the mrs. did'nt like the idea of flat packages of fish food in her freezer, but it is cost effective to say the least and could be very beneficial

I first started thinking about this after reading the following link on melev's reef: http://www.melevsreef.com/food.html

When I have been to Asiana Market on Mt. Moriah buying sushi ingredients (oops! Am I allowed to talk about sushi on this forum??? LOL) I have actually seen the frozen bags of "seafood" so that product is available locally.

Wish it were any other weekend. Lettie and I will be in New Orleans at a scooter rally that weekend. Thanks, Pam, for hosting!

Farmer's Market on Winchester also carries everything you need, but commercial fish food makers like Ocean Nutrition, San Francisco Bay, and Hikari use Gamma Radiation to sterilize their foods to ensure no pathogens, parasites, etc. get into your fish. How will you guys handle that aspect of it? Another thing to consider is that they also add vitamins and minerals essential to fish health. How will you guys go about getting those things?

I will be there. Would it be okay if I bring a small piece of acrylic and my acrylic repair kit so someone can show me how to safely buff out acratches??
I am scared to start on my 60 gal corner acrylic tank for fear of causing more scratches. Also, I believe it was R. Rendos who made homemade fish food at the first reefclub meeting I had at my house in 2005 or 2006. I know he used an eggcrate (like we use in our tanks) as a form for the food and froze it before popping out the cubes and putting in zip lok bags. I know the raw materials were purchased at Walmart, but there were some ingredients in the mixed pack that did not need to be placed in the food.

Personally Speaking (and not as a WTMRAC Official), I've never done a "œHome brew" for Food before, so I can't speak to any of it; only that it has been raised as a possible discussion point for next meeting. (And it's got us talking, so it's good!)

Alternatively, WTMRAC has TRIED to garner support for a Large (Purchased) Food Order, but that met with extremely limited support, and for the life of me I can't figure out why, given the tremendous (Cost) benefits of buying-long. (Unless of course people don't have Freezer space.)

Either way, tank inhabitants need to eat, so it's a "œmake or buy" decision.

For those who wish to join me in a "œBuy", here's the Link to the San Francisco brand order. If you want "œin", drop me a PM.
