WTT: 120g for RR

I started up a 6' 125 last year and I think the initial start up was about 3 grand. The tank, stand, canopy...a lot. Bulbs, cheap reflectors, ballasts, and a decent skimmer and you are close to $1000 already. plus 150# of rock $600-900. RO/DI $200-$400. Cheap pump and powerheads $250. Then you have all the wonderful little plumbing T's, 90's, true unions, pipe, bulkheads $100-150. A heater and a temperature controller and a fan for the summer $100. Salt, pickling lime, prestone driveway heat, mag flake.....you get the idea. I didnt include all of the extra stuff when I start pricing stuff out and ended up $1000 over budget, and I hadnt started getting all the neat little toys yet: controller, calcium reactor, hydrometer.....

i know how much it costs. actually i had all the equipment already. i looked for deals and got mostly used equipment. i had everything i needed to get it going. then i lost my job. it was really close and my parents are all for funding it. basically i sold the equipment i had for all the stuff you see in my nano now. i know what i want to do (not to sound pushy) but you guys have helped me for over a year and this nano is for pure experience. i know that i am not supposed to rush into things but the 120 will be pieced together. it wont even be up for at least a year if i get this job. it will take at least that long to get everything i need again. basically all i was doing was asking. NOT tryign to get any free deals or anything... if the mods feel its necessary then delete the thread.

I've been in this hobby since 2004, I researched for a little over a year before ever buying a tank, and then I still bought a non-RR tank and a bunch of junk that would never had worked.. Then I found this site. I then RE-researched everything I "thought" I knew, took my time, and asked questions and read through 1000's of post and got to know some of the reefer's here before every asking for anything FREE or for next to nothing & still never have. It's clear that the thread starter has no Idea the cost difference between a RR tank & a Non-RR tank. Therefore doesn't know much else about the hobby and is trying to move way to fast or is someone who thinks they can take advantage of how generous the SLASH members are.

If you can't afford the tank..........You can't afford anything else because the tank is the CHEAPEST thing in this hobby. Maybe you should get to know some of us, you'd be surprised at how many of us would love to have you over to see our systems and take the time to explain how they work and the cost & up keep of them.

I'm not trying to be rude, but asking for someone to trade a RR tank for a NON-RR tank is a bit out there for someone who has true intentions or it is someone just trying to take advantage. I always state: "There is no such thing as a dumb question" Please by all means ask any question if you don't know, that's what where here for, to help others. Information is FREE and we are more than willing to give it out. That information can save you huge amount's of money, time and aggravation thru out this hobby. In this case I think Levon15 stated it best. Refer to his comment. I'd love to help you understand & grow in this hobby if that's what your seeking. We have Frag Swaps and pizza nights which are prefect venues for newbi's to meet us and ask every question they can think of in person, and we'd love to see you there.

i have an older 120 that is tempered. i would like to trade this for a used (or new, new is good) RR 120. if someone has a 120 not being used and could jsut trade me that would be great. it is in great condition and includes an iron stand. all i need from you is the tank.

i know its alot to ask for someone to trade a RR for a non-RR but i would really like to be that much close to getting the ball rolling on this project.

LMK!

P.S. i can get pictures for people that are truly interested.

You can have the back pane of the tank drilled. MS drills hole for I think $20 per hole. You can then make a Cali-flow overflow for the tank. However IMO beings you are a newbi, I would just buy a new RR tank as that's the easyest route. And get rid of the Iron stand, it will rust in a very short amount of time. Any metal will rust fast due to the salt content. The cheapest stand would be a wooden stand and if you build your own make sure to paint the inside with white FLAT paint to help preserve the wood as well as refect the light.

However if your short on dough drilling the tank you already have could be done cheap. I think I have a diamond bit somewhere around here and I'm sure someone on here could help with the overflow design. I'd say a few of us on here could make it become a RR tank with the proper stand and get you on your way.

ive looked into getting it drilled. two problems, one its temepered and two most places wont insure it so if they break then im screwed unless i pay a ton per hole. i researched this site for at least a year myself. then when i had all of the stuff for the 120 i took a step back and decided to sell it back off. if you ever looked at my 120 thread that i had started i had most of the workings already. as well as a custom made stand. the iron one is the one that came with the tank when i bought it. basically i know this isnt a cheap hobby and as i have said before its not just me. for example. today my mom went to PR to get water for me since she works nearby and she came home with a shrimp and a decent rock of coral. given the room in my tank she would have bought more. her examples were a "huge urchin", a tang, and some other items that just wont fit in my tank. my mom is helping me with this. so its not all me here. she herself knows what it costs from my experience. basically i wasnt asking for a donation or anything free. i wasnt asking for help and i wasnt asking for someone to judge me. i was asking if someone had a tank they dont want because maybe they recently upgraded or are moving. i wasnt begging or trying my hardest just checking. i think its unfair how im being treated just because of a request on information. i havent been doing this since 2004 so i guess i just dont know what im doing though.

P.S. i know the difference between a RR and Non-RR. and if someone didnt know that that still wouldnt make them a person that doesnt know anything.

someone close this thread now. i think the bashing is done here.

Are you kidding me? I've re-read ALL the posts and no one is bashing you at all. We are just doing what RC was put here for. To give advice through our experience. You have a 120. Use it if you want the room, sure, you are limited in some aspects, but even then, there are HOB overflows. You have the stand and all the equipment, so go for it. I'm sure you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting someone on here who has been successful with a non-RR. Bashing isn't something done here, ribbing and the occasional off-color joke is bound to happen. But no one is angry or even the slightest sarcastic. If we were all sitting around a table talking I'm sure you would take it completely different. Unfortunately, text is black and white, no accents or inflections can be read, so there is a chance I guess something could be misinterpreted as bashing. Sorry you feel that way, it's just not the case. We are trying to help.

well im sorry i was getting defensive on that note then. and i know that many have been succesful with non-RR but RR tanks tend to look 10x better to my eye. and the tank like i said wouldnt be started for a VERY long time. im not rushing into it for sure. and yes for right now i am focused on my nano. in fact im very happy with the progress made on it. plus (talking to my parents) i have a habit of over doing things most of the time. so all i wanted to do was get info on if people had some 120s that werent being used thats all. even though i doubt ill be able to find a 5' tank. the only 5' tank glasscages makes is like 190 something i think. its ridiculously big and i havent seen a 120 long in a long time. but i think i could make the stand fit a regular 4' 120.

Glass Cages makes tanks any size you like. They have "standard" sizes but will make any tank to your specifications.

I wouldn't worry about the stand. The cheapest thing you can do in this hobby is build a stand - nothing but wood and screws.

ha well let me say this much. im TERRIBLE at woodwork and this stand took me forever (i didnt want to mess it up AT ALL). so id rather not create that moment again. i have a question, on glass cages it says that they will ship any tank under 90 to your door. how do you get a bigger tank from them?

You have to either go pick it up at their facility in TN or meet them at a show they're going to be at (which is what I had to do with my 100 gallon cube).

When I pulled out my secret weapon, "The [chimp]" I was just ribbing you:D

Glasscages delivers the tanks every couple months to a show in STL. Just take your vehicle down there and get it. Otherwise, shipping a larger glass tank can get pretty expensive. I haven't heard rave reviews on their acrylic tanks so I'd probably stick to glass if you used them.

-Mike

IMO I just think think you should stick with 120 and use a HOB overflow. I have a reef ready tank up and going now but my new in wall tank has an overflow, as long as you have an aqualifter and check it from time to time you shouldn't have any problems. We have all started somewhere I have had a saltwater tank since I was 18 and back then I didn't have the blessed community on reef central but I learned from experience instead. Anyway you have a start with the tank, if you go to www.marine depot.com the overflows are not that much.

Oh and as far as the look between a RR and an hob overflow you really don't see the overflow. You can look at the pics in my thread and see that it only takes up a small portion in the top right of the tank.

I had a 5ft 120 that I loved and I used overflows on it for the longest. I sold it to one day have a 180 gallon.

alright well then i guess ill do that unless a deal really strikes me. i watch craigslist all the time so something good my pop up. glass cages 135s are cheaper AND 5'. i might look into one of those. they are coming here in not too long but id have to sell my 120 first. someone is talking to me about $400 for the tank and my stand that i built. so who knows i might have a 135 rolling in sometime. i really like the look of those from looking at glasscages.
