Xanthichthys caeruleolineatus

I am trying to find information on this triggerfish. Has anyone ever seen one? Had one? etc?

I know that they are a deepwater trigger, and related to the Crosshatch, but that is where my knowledge ends. What is their common name? Are they collected for the ornamental trade?

Thanks

I have not had one myself, but know a little about them. I don't see them for sale very often, but I don't usually look for triggerfish. Common name that I have seen is Blueline Triggerfish, get about a foot long I believe, and are found in the Indo-Pacific. I have heard they are found in Hawaiian waters, but I don't know if they are there commonly. Good luck, I'm sure someone who knows more than I will be able to help more.

Much of the information that I have found on them is regarding their importance to the commercial fisheries, and how they are caught (rod and reel) while bottom fishing.

They are collected, I've seen them called the gold back or golden back as well as the blue line. Usually they're in the $1400 range. Bluezooaquatics lists them on their site, but I doubt they get them in with any regularity.

I just thought that this is a very nice looking trigger. And I am not a huge trigger fan.

Id like to see one in person though.

Last year, diver's den had one for about a year. They dropped him down to about 700 when he sold. They referrred to him as a goldenback. If you look on the the front right of this pic you can see him.:D

I know he is reefsafe and a very deepwater fish.

The goldenback is fish that needs a HUGE aquarium. They are usually found at 10"+. I had the opportunity to buy a 10" one 2 years back and passed due to the fact that it requires at least a 500g tank.

Most were coming from Hawaii, until tonga started exporting them for slightly cheaper (which is why the price dropped from 1500, to about 1000) Also, christmas island has exported them once and a while.

I have had a couple. 2 from Hawaii and 1 from christmas. all of which were in the 10" range.

Brian Green caught the smallest one on record in Hawaii i believe at 8" (that should give you a huge hint!!)

IME, they are VERY passive triggerfish. I tried to feed him ghost shrimp but he only ate the tiny ones and left the big ones to forage (no interest in them). He loved frozen clam and mysis.

great fish if you can find the cash and the room!

Big Al's in Florida had/has one in their 1100(IIRC?)gal tank. Beauty to see.

I wanna see a Xanthichthys lineopunctatus in captivity though!! :smokin: :eek1:

How big of a tank will this go in? My friend had one a few years back, they are HUGE, well over a foot, and still growing. I had to take care of the fish while he was away and it was very personable, ate silversides right out of my hand, really beautiful looking too, but they need tons of swimming room (horizontal space). This fish makes the crosshatch seem small and the blue jaw seem tiny.
