great thread... A++++++++++ will read again...

What you bought there is mutilated yellow tang, Zebrasoma flavescens, that someone has deliberately cut up its dorsal fin, in order to get that 'horned' appearance, and presumably a higher price tag.

I would really suggest going back to where you got it from, and confront them about it. It's a little appalling that they would be selling it as such, they really should know there's no such thing as a yellow horned tang. On the off chance they don't happen to know, have them contact their distributors. That's atrocious.

BTW, I would also post this in the Reef Fishes section, so more people see this.

Is part of his dorsal fin missing or is this a deformity? Sorry if this was meant to be a joke and I didn't get it...

i hope you were being facetious...

no one does that to the fish so it could look cool or different... they're just deformed from birth sometimes... during the collection times, they don't pick them out from the ocean, they just bag 'em up and ship them out...

if you talk to breeders; especially koi/goldfish/carp type breeders... they go thru a process of culling the fry... some of the fry come out deformed or just don't have good coloration, so they just kill them all before they weaken the gene pool down the road... it's a perfectly normal process... but since tangs get shipped... by the time they are shipped, it's too expensive to cull out the deformed ones... since they have allready been shipped... go to the distributors... you will see a bunch of deformed fish...

He is not multilated Yellow Tang. He was unwanted fish in the batch, many other thought he is deformed fish, but I can see the beauty in him, so I bought him. Just like those deformed Asian Arowana (freshwater fish)

His dorsal fin is missing little piece and perfectly heal.

Actually it is a fairly normal procedure for collector to trim the gray part of Naso tangs dorsal fin, so the fish looks better.

Sometimes unhealthy Yellow tangs, will lose some of their dorsal fin, but usually retain that front part, the 'horn'. Here's an example;

However if you notice, the rest of NVTE's yellow tang appears to be normal.

And even if it wasn't intentional, the LFS should really hold themselves to a professional level, and not try to make money off unsuspecting customers, by selling a "yellow horned tang," which doesn't exsist

No. They didn't offer me as Horned Yellow Tang. I just name him because his damaged part look like a horn to me.

Cosmetic surgery for fish is just wrong.

Ah, okay, that's obviously different. I was under the impression that you simply purchased this fish as a "yellow horned tang." Presumably for a premium over a standard yellow tang. I shall put my flaming pitchfork away then

The fact you gave this fish a good home, is really awesome. BTW, I think you lucked out as well. That appears to be a yellow variety of a Scopas tang. Not actually a Yellow Tang. Like this one that just sold

i've never seen a naso with it's grey fin cut off... it says in the link that they...
Trimming fins and sharp scalpels is necessary and common

i have heard of them trimming some of the sharp fins like on rabbit fish so they don't kill other fish or pop the bags during shipment... look in the scissors... they have a bunch of barbs on them... the naso have huge barbs...

and i doubt anyone that frequents a forum will buy a deformed common yellow tang because the LFS told him it's rare, or special... LOL... maybe a newb... but even a newb will know that it's a deformed or beat up fish...

Heart shaped blood parrots..? There are horrible things people do to fishes and if this fish became in demand people are willing to cut it up

heart shape parrots are not cut up... those are fry that come out deformed that haven't been culled out... see what happens... ask a flowerhorn breeder... it happens a lot... just that commercial breeders don't care if it's deformed because to them it's just a buck swimming with it's dorsal and pectoral fin... that also happens because of the inbreeding... goldfish are all deformed spawns of carp... they just keep coming out with these messed up fish that to some look awesome and they just have to have... like... hold on let me get a pic...

this...
jjy_2.jpg

that goldfish was born with four bubbles instead of two like the common bubble eye goldies... that one sold for four thousand dollars... i remember all the goldfish forums were nuts over these guys... and they keep making people money...

anyways... the only bad thing that LFS do carry that is horrible for the fish are painted freshwater fish... they put them in three different chemicals, and it makes their survival rate drop by 90%... another thing is balloon fish... like balloon rams, mollies and such... those are exposed to some kind of metalic chemical that causes them to deform themselves as fry... sucks...
