Yellow Tang Care

Hi all,

Though it's a long way off until I even consider looking at yellow tangs, I want to be knowledgeable before I make a regrettable or unfair decision.

1) my tank is a 5 x 2 x 2 tank (approx 150 gallons). Suitable for a yellow tang or no? I've seen a lot of conflicting opinions on this, but if more experienced reefers than I suggest skipping the tang because my tank is simply too small from experience, I definitely won't bring one home! For example, liveaquaria suggests 100 gallons but many posters agree 6' is appropriate swimming space. My livestock at the moment just includes an ocellaris pair.

2) Any tips or experiences with yellow tangs if you deem my tank appropriate? I'll definitely quarantine it in my 4' QT.

Thanks. I value your responses immensely and take them on board. I just want to prevent any fish from suffering in a tank that is just too small.

You sir are very responsible fish caretaker.
People put yellow tang on 20 gallons long term and they think it's fine because yellow tang is very cheap. I seen it way too many times too unfortunately.

To answer you question yes it's big enough
2 they are one of the easiest fish in the hobby.
You can qt them in as little as 20 gallon since it will only going to be there for a short period of time.

You can do one of the ff.

cupramine and prazipro method

Tank transfer method

Or CP

Hypo salinity doesn't work for me

+1
When I first got in the hobby I was SOOO bad. I put a niger trigger, yellowblotch rabbitfish, yellow tang, threadfin butterfly, and a few others in a 55, I got a scooter blenny without any pods, didn't QT, kept replacing my HOB media, so there was never any biological media, I almost never did water changes, had a fluorescent strip light and I got corals. I got a gorgonian, zooanthids, etc, none of which survived. I was such a bad fishkeeper back then. That was 9 years ago. Now I'm extremely better than that.

Your tank would definitely fit a Yellow Tang. Anything smaller and they seem to swim around erratically. Easier fish, feed lots of marine based greens, and QT.
