Yellow tang in with a purple tang

I've had my purple tang in my tank for two years and would like to add a yellow tang to it. How do you go by doing this. I don't want them to kill one another :hmm3:

Divine intervention.
or
Only way I see it happening is to remove the purple tang, buy a new purple/yellow add them at the same time and pray, ime purples don't play well with other zebrasomas.

yea its not worth the trouble. ive had to separate tangs before. its not fun when they refuse to be caught. i would just stay with the purple. or get a holding tank and place them both in there for a week re do the rock (cause the purple will recognize its home) and then place them back in and hope for the best. they may still remind each other whos boss every now and than.

What tang can I add to it. I have a hippo now and they are best friend. They swim around everywhere together. I have a green hair algae problem and trying to add stuff to help

Is this for your 75?

IMO, you are already at your tang limit for that sized tank (( in fact I wouldn't have put a hippo in a 75 )). There are other ways to deal with hair algae -- and IMO, adding another waste producing fish would make things worse, not better.

whao...yea im with todd. 2 tangs is 1 tang to many in a 75. it will stunt their growth. if u upgrade u can do any of the naso family they are nice, i have a lipstick naso personally with a purple and they play nice. i would stay away from the acanthorous family as they can be very aggressive, as well as hard to keep.

Ok this post is over. I'll ask a friend the best way to do something next time.

So in other words, you really didn't want any experienced input that is going to conflict with what you are already set to do regardless? I along with the others in this thread agree that 1 tang per a 75 gallon tank is the limit. Even considering adding a yellow to a small tank with a Purple that is already established is asking for immediate problems with aggression and it is irresponsible on your part.

take the fish out for a few days, completely re-arrange the rock works, and make sure the yellow tang is the same or a little larger than the purple and feed them well with multiple nori stations - fought the first few days but worked for me in a 90g reef for years

Friend of mine put a yellow and purple into his 100g system a few months ago.
They kind of divided the tank in half, with frequent skirmishes over territory (chasing, tail wagging etc).

Then last week, all hell broke loose when the purple decided it wanted the yellow's territory. A fight to the death ensued. He managed to catch the purple and sump it for a day.
Put it back and the war picked up where it ended. Torn fins and body cuts on both of them. Eventually I said, take one of the tangs out and you can keep it in my 4ft quarantine system until you build a bigger system (which is what his plan was when he put the 2 fish into his 100g).
So yes, I'm baby sitting for him now.

I had warned him that it was only a matter of time before the 2 squared up in his tank. You could see it from day one, as they continually challenged each other.

These two tangs will work if in a large enough system.
I have a 300g set up and my two get along fine. Put them together in a small set up and there is a strong chance of one eventually killing the other.

But you go ahead and do what you want to do.
Let us know the outcome, so we can all learn something from your experience.

Btw it's a little lame to start a thread looking for advise, and then pouting when you get it and it's not what you want to hear. The advice given was sound and I hope you follow it.

Add a sea hare or a lawn mower blenny. Also, add a few mexican turbo snails.

+1. Unfortunately, this is fairly common in this hobby. :(

many books and places like LA give tank sizes
you asked a question and people here give the best honest advice they can to u
please for the health of the fish just 1 for the 75

Would adding a purple in with 3 yellow tangs in a 430 yield the same results?

I think it could be doable in that tank. Not a sure thing or anything, but I would give it a shot if you want as long as you have a back up plan if it gets too ugly

I added a purple in with two yellows and a hippo not too long ago and while not without some agression, it went pretty smoothly considering. The yellows and the purple were all pretty much the same size.

I would definitely put a couple of mirrors up though

Hopefully your friend will be honest enough with you to tell you that it won't work. You are going to end up with 1 or 2 dead fish. If you are OK with that you are probably in the wrong hobby.
